722.4 Overhaul

Has anyone overhauled their 722.4 transmission in their w124 300d 2.5 on here? I'm curious what comes in the master overhaul kit. My reverse is going out and I'm going to do a rebuild. Is the reverse clutch included in the kit? What should I order? First time I've had to order these.

All the clutch parts should be in the kit...but make sure you tell the vendor that it's for a turbo car. The turbo cars have an extra clutch disk in each pack (total of 5). Here's an exploded diagram which may help:

And you can find the parts list in the Dacco catalog:

Thanks, Frank. That was a huge help... Any idea of what kind of torque converter I have? I've been looking around and finding all different types listed. Lockup, non-lockup??

I go to trade school and took a class on automatics, this one will be cake being a 4 speed and take me about 45 minutes once its on the bench. Is there any special tools I'll need along the way besides a compressor?

*Edit* when you buy the kit with the "steels". What does that mean?

If you look in the diagram, you'll see that each clutch pack contains a stack of friction plates and steel discs. I assume they are referring to the discs.

If it helps, I had my transmission rebuilt at a shop in NJ that does a lot of Mercedes automatics. They also manufacture and sell DIY kits. It may not be a bad idea to call them and have them assemble the correct kit for you:

TRANS SPECIALTIES | Remanufactured transmissions | rebuilt transmissions | transmission parts | torque converters

I didn't think they used lock-up converters until much later.

I'm not a transmission guy, but I think the lockup torque converter showed up with the 722.6

That's kind of what I figured. I spoke with them and will likely buy a rebuild kit from them. They say I may not need the steel discs unless they're burnt. I got the car with no trans fluid in it, so who knows if they're burnt up or not. The new fluid doesn't smell burnt at all, and its still red after driving it.
