Any special tools for trans removal on w124

Dropping my trans next week on my 92 300d 2.5 for a rebuild and torque converter rebuild. Reverse is getting a mind of its own and working when it wants. Is there any special tools needed for removal?

Will you be using a lift? It makes the job a whole lot easier.

You will want a 3/8" extension that is about 3 or 4 feet long to come in over the top of the transmission for the upper engine to transmission fasteners (IIRC 17mm). After disconnecting the driveshaft let the back of the transmission drop down as far as it will go then it is pretty straight forward to get to the upper fasteners with the long extension. You may find you need a swivel adapter at the socket end of the extension. Use a 3/8 to 1/2 inch adapter and break them lose with a 1/2" breaker bar.

Oh yea, make sure the car is high enough in the air to get the transmission out from under the car once it is disconnected.

Yes, 100% using a lift. It'd be a bear on the ground, but I'd do it if I have to. Sounds like cake though with the tools and lift. Is there any special tools needed inside the transmission besides a compressor?

I'm going to document this rebuild as well and make it a DIY for anyone who's interested.

opps, I did not realize you were asking about the rebuild. I can't answer that.

Well, I was referencing removal in the original post from the car.. Once inside though I'm worried I may need a special tool.

I just replaced mine on my E300D, yes 17mm and a long extension and also helps to have a wiggler socket and if you lift up the front of the engine a little it helps with clearance at least on my diesel.

as said - 3 or 4 ft long extension to reach the top bolts. other than that - if you want to dig into opening it, I would suggest you get a clutch pack compressor on ebay or make one from PVC piping from a home store.

I would suggest you find a manual for your trans and take a ton of pictures too as its an older hydraulic unit, its quite a bit more involved compared to a modern electronic unit.

the driver side bolt isn't as bad as passenger, I found reaching up and guiding the socket on while working the long extension with other arm was best method because you really can't see it except from rear.
