An idea for all the old 123 Fans out there (literally)

I kept the aluminum fan from my '79 300CD and after all these years, I finally found a good use for it. I fit it up with a clock. I still need to buff the blade on a wheel, but it's looking pretty good in my shop. If anyone wants to do this, a 2 3/8" fit-up clock will work in the center hole without modification. I bought this one, with a 4" face from Ronell Clock:

The fins are not evenly spaced. Was this the change the quality of the noise or something?

Prolly to avoid harmonics (whatever that is). I had one of those aluminum blades break off one time on my 62 190c. I cut off the one opposite to balance it out and kept driving it.

Sweet. I could get away with this in the garage but not in the house.

Years ago I used the big clock from an 1982 240d as a desk clock. I planned to make a case but I never did it. I just ran it in its open state.

I knew I kept the old aluminum fan from OM602 for a reason.

The fins are unevenly spaced to reduce, or rather, to tune noise. Evenly spaced fins produce a sinusoidal wave, which you would hear as a hum or whine depending on the speed of the blade. By spacing the blades at irregular intervals, the resulting sound is white noise. I have to say it's very impressive that these irregular blades have perfect balance.

Curious, it's shaped like a 5 pointed star. Why didn't you position the clock so it looks like the star?

Looks good, perfect office or garage accessory.

Typically this is so you can maneuver belts and wrenches around the blades when working.

My 2000 truck has weirdly placed blades too.

Take a closer look. First of all, there are six blades, not five. Second, every angle is different. Not done for tool access (that's pretty funny), done to reduce noise.
