ID diameter of power steering pump return hose?

On a 1984 300DT is the interior diameter 12mm or 14mm??

BillGrissom 01-12-2017 04:29 PM

I posted pn's for both low and high pressure p.s. hoses I used a few years ago.

I need to know this too as my '82 300CD's return hose is beginning to weep .

Also, how long a piece ? mote than one meter ? .

Should I by aftermarket or Dealer/Classic Center hose ? .

Everything you need to know about power steering hoses.
Everyone else - feel free to help the group by posting such links after searching them out.

Thank you Bill for posting the link. It seems that hoses are one of the bigger challenges with regards to dealing with classic MB automobiles. Any chance of you authoring a book about the art and science of hose making complete with photos? I'm sure you would have a ready audience for such a book......

The post I linked has photos and details. The high-pressure fittings are re-usable, and only tools needed are two box wrenches. Anyone can buy the hose material off ebay or from a local Tractor Supply.

Thanx Bill .

I'm still not quite sure what to use on the return hose .

BTW : there's no pressure in the return line unless there's a problem .

The fitting for the return line has an OD of 12mm. If you can find a 7/16 power steering hose that would be good. I tried a 1/2" one and it was too loose. I forced a 3/8" hose to the fitting and thats what im using now.

P.S. Return Hose

THANX ! .

I'd go bonkers looking at that every time I raised the bonnet.... .

For those who didn't read the link I (thoughtfully) posted, for the low-pressure hose I used:
Parker 611HT-8, SAE 100R6, 1/2" ID, 400 psi.

The old return hose was labeled 'Parker Push-Lok 831-8 WP 300 PSI 1/2" 03/01/11'.

My recommendation was:
SAE 100R6-8: 1 fiber braid, 1/2" ID, 400 psi working, ex. Gates 8GTHXCTN

7/16" ID = 11.1 mm, so could probably force it over the 12 mmD fitting. 1/2" = 12.7 mm and is what my old return hose was stamped (original?). I have/had some transmission cooler hose (7/16" ID, I recall), so not sure why I didn't use it. Just ask for that at any auto parts and they'll cut to length.

Don't think you can get more details than what we gave, so just go out and do it.

For an '82, the car below my signature, I bought a meter of this one- Part #: 000-997-47-52-M21, by Continental/Contitech. I think it might even be enough for two lengths of return hose. I have a 47.5 cm piece left over, and I cut the hose that went in the car a little long. It seems like a fine pice of material- installed a few years ago, and holding up fine. I'm pleased with it. I replaced the clamps, too.

P.S. Return Hose

Thanx Marshal and Bill ! .

I ordered up three meters of it and will prolly do all of my cars .

As a Journeyman Mechanic I'm not fond of forcing inch sized things to fit Metric applications .

Ditto that; metric hose fits metric fittings EXACTLY, not so much when trying to use inch/SAE hose onto a metric fitting.

you need a caliper and tape measure.
