Today's a BIG Day in My Life!

January 28, 1947 was a big day in my life. That's when I came into this crazy world, making me 70! today. It's kind of a big deal. When I was diagnosed with diabetes some 35 years ago I was told to expect to live to 70 and at that time that was a reasonable guess. We didn't even have glucometers yet never mind Lantus (slow-acting insulin) and a lot of the other management systems we have today.

So here I am, still standing and seemingly not leaving in the near future. I'm much more likely to die WITH diabetes rather than FROM diabetes. I'll take it!

Dick (the Volvo owner) is coming over to take me out to lunch and then, with any luck, the Volvo will get it's new engine fired up for the first time. Looking forward to that. Sounds like an excellent birthday.

Dan

Is the track open there this time of year? A 1320' pass to celebrate would be fun.
Congrats.

Congratulations and Happy Birthday! Glad to hear that you are winning your battle with diabetes. Feel good about it because many are finding out that it's a debilitating disease.

I wish mine was a little more successful. When I hit 60 this past year, first a major heart attack and then congestive heart failure. Now my MB venture is very limited. Just waxing the car is a process that takes several days.

Had my heart attack 14+ years ago. Good doctoring has kept me out of congestive heart failure (I'm on a ton of drugs) but I've been running on 3/4 of a heart since the heart attack. The left outer wall is kaput. I put HUGE effort into staying up and running but it's been more than worth it. I test blood sugars before each meal and adjust insulin bolus dosage and food intake accordingly. Because I'm an engaged patient the endrocrinologist (sp?) has turned me loose with sliding scales for both Lantus and Humalog and I slide 'em! And fer God's sake, NO cheese! Concentrated fat!

Anyhow, so far I'm doing OK though with some limitations. I'm a lucky guy for a whole bunch of reasons.

Dan

Congratulations and Happy Birthday Dan! You're only two months behind me but I lack your health challenges. The two diesels and I keep plugging along. Hope all goes well during your "bonus years."

Thanks Yuke and all the rest of you folks!

And Yuke - some of the knowledge I've shared is even accurate but you have to pick the gems out of the gravel. Good luck with that - though I don't deliberately hide the gems.
