Question Radio says ' WAIT' & Does Nothing....

So;

The old Becker in my W123 began squealing in AM mode so I discovered another with Becker ' rebuilt ' tags on it in the junkyard, bought it and connected it ~ when I turn it on all I get is : WAIT in the display .

So I waited and waited.....

How long am I supposed to wait ? .

Did I just flush $20 ? .

Anyone want a free Becker Electronic that works O.K. on FM, has all the lights working but a loose volume bar.....?

This is a first or me : I've replace the missing original radios in all but one of the many M-B's I've ever had because the Becker is an outstanding radio sounds and performance wise, once you replace the crispy original speakers .

No Junk Yard radio has failed yet, this is a new thing to me .

Ideas ? .

It means someone entered the wrong code too many times. You need to leave it on for an hour (powered by the ignition feed) so you can enter the code again.

If you didn't get a code with the radio it won't work. Becker USA might be able to provide you with the code.

What model Becker is it? The BE780 and BE1480 will go into wait mode if the wrong code is entered. I forget the exact amount of time for each incorrect entry but it can take as long as 24 hours to clear the code.

Do you have the code for the radio? I can get it for you if you supply the serial number.

Once in a while I get a Becker that won't unlock with the serial number derived code. It these cases the EEPROM is corrupted or the board it's on has been swapped with a different radio. When that happens I flash a new one.

If you do not have the code - pull radio and retrieve SN#. Then you can go to:

You will have to pull it out - it will be on back of unit. Grab the model number or take picture of everything

After entering the code wrong too many times, it will lock you out until becker has the radio and resets it themselves. Theft prevention.

Over 4 times and you're SOL.

Don't trash it, contact Becker in NJ. They will either fix it for you (for a nominal fee) or they may even want to buy it from you.

I've had several radios repaired by them, and they mentioned if you ever find one in a junkyard, to save it, they are always looking for the old model radios for spare parts. Don't forget about the amp and tuner modules in the trunk on later 124s/126s/140s/210s.

Thanx ~

I occasionally look at those amp. modules under the back seat and wonder if they'd be useful to boost volume in my truck's old Delco radio.....

I've had so many problems with those small amps... after replacing them 4 times in my SDL I removed them and installed an Alpine amp.

Red face Patience

O.K. then ;

I have it here in my hand : Model BE 1480 .

Serial # A 516296

I let it sit for an hour and it still says ' WAIT ' .

The site provided shows four different Becker Grand Prix Electronic radios and doesn't accept the serial # no matter what I do .

My old spare Grand Prix is working O.K. but no AM and I use AM a lot for News, Weather and Traffic Reports so any help would be greatly appreciated guys ! .

The serial number is supposed to have 8 characters.
Maybe you're missing a number?

If you had multiple unsuccessful tries, you may need to have the key in the ignition for 24 hours for the WAIT display message to reset to the CODE display message: Becker Grand Prix Electronic Model BE 1480

The fee for the code retrieval is $20 according to the Becker website: Becker AutoSound LLC - Mercedes BMW Ferrari Porsche Auto Audio Repairs

Here is a free online code retrieval app: Download BECKER Radio Code

Hope this helps
