'05 E320 CDI- What an amazing car!

I went on a short road trip today for the first time in my newly acquired CDI. WOW! this car is incredible! Of course I already knew that, but I hadn't personally experienced it until today. The car is quick, comfortable, smooth, quiet, and very economical. My trip today was about two and one half hours long, and about 130 miles total. I traveled on mostly freeway from the high desert to the low desert. Coming home, I drove over a 3,500' pass and got over 40 MPG on the trip!
About half way through, I was getting around 39 and got up to 40.3. When I got home, the total was 40.2. Mind you, the trip home was mostly uphill! Needless to say, I am very happy with the performance and economy of this car. I think everyone should get one!......Rich

Just so you know, the fuel economy readings tend to be skewed high. That's been the almost universal experience of those who track their mileage. Mine's off by over 3 mpg. One forum member found his readings off by about 6 mpg.

With a W210, you can't flash tune it...you have to replace a couple of chips on the ECU board. I didn't see any fuel economy improvement but the power gains are noticeable.

Rocketchip is in Central PA. So you would pull your ECU and ship it to them. I was able to drive there and Jeff did it while I waited.

I've toyed with getting the CDI tuned. But it's so powerful as is it's hard to see the point. I know it would eliminate the slight turbo lag.

Hey Rollguy,
I've been searching for an '05 or'06 for some time. I did find one in Arizona.'05 with 110000 miles on it and he was asking $8800.00. I asked him for the VIN# on a Friday and the next day he replied back "sold sorry".
How many miles were on your car when you bought it and if you don't mind me asking what did you pay for it?
I'm trying to figure out what a general value is on these cars.
How long have you owned the car and have you ever done a glow plug change on it? I'm curious to know if that is a fairly easy job to do on that model and year.

Thanks,
Rick

I've also been looking for one for years now. I missed a screaming deal on one up in Eugene, OR while I was on a trip to CA for business. it was $7900 for a one owner, loaded 2005 in mint condition. I think it had 120k on the odometer.

That was a sad day...it was sold before I flew back the next day.

Good result and sounds like paying for shipping it cross-country was worthwhile. Being from the northeast, the plastic should be little sun damaged, and whatever rust it might have will shrivel up in the Mojave Desert. I recall concerns of what the blue fluid would cost, but see it cheap at auto parts. The fuel savings will pay for a lot of parts in the future.

If you can make the climb to the Cajon Pass this summer with no issues, you will be home free. We used to see a car steaming on the side every 1/2 mile, especially on the first hot June day when people hadn't checked their coolant level. I understand that factories qualify their cooling designs on a summer climb from the L.A. Basin.

I just got the car a month or so ago, and it had 184,XXX miles on it. I had it shipped to CA from Ohio. The body and interior I would rate at at least an 8 out of 10, and it has never been smoked in. It had a few major issues that I fixed. It does have a crack in the windshield, and I will get it replaced soon. I made sure there was no major rust before buying the car, and it appears that this car is for the most part rust free. There is a little rust on the brake parts, and just surface rust on a couple fasteners under the car. This little bit I expected, and it is not a big deal.
From the beginning, I was looking for a blue one with a light color interior (or anything but black), but this car came up and they (Toyota dealer) accepted my offer, so I bought it. Once it is all finished, I may sell it to buy the exact car I am looking for. Until then, I will enjoy every mile I drive it!
EDIT: It does have one glow plug broke off in the head (that way when I got it), so I will have to find someone with the tools to drill it out. Yes, they are all very accessible, and are not hard to replace.

Buy and install ceramic brake pads instead of the soft normal pads from the dealer. It cuts down on pad dust about 95%.

MB has always specified soft pads. They must know something. Stick w/ OEM and clean your wheels.

They also specified only 8 psi boost in the w123 OM617-95X with no intercooler, small holes in the pre chambers, small solid rotors instead of vented and sealed beam headlights. None of those are still present on my wagon.

I got tired of cleaning them every other day. Rotors can be changed, and we can add features so we can play music thru the Harmon Kardon system from our smart phones as well. Sometimes we improve- and that is a personal decision. YMMV.

Agree on some "improvements" but MB factory oem brakes will always stop more reliably over greater set of conditions and has been tested to do so. Anything else is a crap shoot.

Sealed headlights was mandated by feds. Not sure how music from smart phones figures into factory question.

MB does not spec. ceramic pads. Sorry....using them deviates from their design and probably limits their liability for possible failure of the braking system.
