Yes, there has been discussion here at mShop about this van.
Actually there is much more about this van that is MB than the engine. The entire van is a Mercedes, sold with the three pointed star in Europe, but sold and marketed by Freightliner in the US. There is talk that this van will soon be sold at your neighborhood Chrysler dealer. Have a great day, |

I've heard that this van's meant to replace the Dodge B-series full size vans. I also heard that they're marketing them under the Freightliner name instead of the M-B name in the United states for psychological reasons. Their primary target is apparently going to be commercial/sleet sales, and they're worried that the companies won't buy the vans with an M-B namebadge because the companies' customers may see the M-B logo and feel that the companies spent more $$ than they should have on the vans.
Kinda weird, but hey! If they bring it over here with a diesel, I won't complain...

There is a persistent rumor in the Columbia statehouse that mercedes will construct a plant in the Charleston, SC area to build the sprinter van. Hope so.
We passed a bond bill for several hundred million to do "infrastructure" work to lure them here and to support an expansion of the upstate BMW plant. If you have never toured a modern car plant, try to find time to do so. The BMW plant in Spartenburg, SC is something else. Lowest paid production worker makes $50k and there is zero turnover. Workers get special deals on BMWs and the parking lot is full of them. After tourning that plant I recall thinking that Osama might think twice about picking a fight with us if he could just spend some time in there. Incredible technology and machines as far as the eye can see. Nic '85 300CD |

FedEx uses them near me and I see them pretty regularly. IMHO, they are ugly. But hey, it is an MB diesel!

I got the opportunity to talk to a FedEx driver. He popped the hood and let me check it out. According to him, the engine pulls that van around quite nicely. Remember folks, these aren't like our slow, noisy, smoky prechamber diesels that we are used to.

Freightliner Engine specs from site.
Plenty of power just when you need it most: for hill starts and overtaking on the freeway - even when fully loaded.
The CDI engine is not only powerful but also designed for both ease of maintenance and long service intervals, it offers a unique level of efficiency thanks to more exact control of fuel metering, greater ignition precision and almost constant injection pressure. All of which give it a clear advantage over conventional gasoline engines. Unique performance: 154 hp at 3,800 rpm Average fuel consumption of 22 miles per gallon (city/freeway) Maintenance intervals of 10,000 miles Exhaust-driven turbocharger with variable turbine geometry (VTG) Exceptionally smooth running despite diesel technology Extremely long service life -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Engine: MBE 600 2.7 liter turbocharged 5-cylinder diesel Horsepower: 154 @ 3,800 rpm Torque: 243 lb-ft. @ 1,600 - 2,400 rpm Fuel system: Standard height: 93" / high roof: 102" Transmission: Mercedes-Benz 5-speed automatic w/overdrive Fuel tank: 25 gallons Camshafts: 2 (ohc) Maximum speed: 86 mph -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From Freightliner site: Note it pushes the big box well and with great mpg.

A freind of mine drives one for fedex. He reports it is quite peppy and says its nearly as fast as his daily driver honda. thats a pretty big compliment when you consider its a big truck full of packages.

Can anyone tell me if Mercedes put a steel/cast iron cylinder head in this 2.7 cdi engine? If they did that would be great because the engine with the steel/cast iron head lasts almost forever. What else did Mercedes put the 2.7 cdi engine in?

A local guy here in So CA has a Sprinter. His son is disabled and he uses it for transporting the wheel chair. It helps that he works for Freightliner.
That engine has a problem with either the vacuum pump or the injection pump. His disintegrated and caused some problems with the engine. This is not the only engine with this problem according to what the Freightliner repair guys told him (and he passed along to me). Sorry I don't have any other details. I do know that it took awhile to get the part because his wasn't the only one. Get in line. Its kind of tall, narrow and gawky looking, maybe you have to get used to it? The Vlade Divacs of vans? :-) (not sorry for the pot shot @ The Sac Kings)
