'85 *722.315* Rebuild (going into '84)

OK... I'm pulling the '85D engine and transmission (Federal) today. The transmission worked impeccably prior to vehicles retirement from service (wife's incident with an F250). I will be installing the transmission into a recently purchased '84D.

The 1985 Federal version has the 722.315 transmission... these have a higher stall speed torque converter. The '85 has the Vacuum Transducer (Blue Flying Saucer). I intend to install both the higher stall speed torque converter and vacuum transducer into the '84 as well... if possible.

I have looked @ Stretch's and whunter's write-ups and other transmission posts. I will start buying parts tonight for the rebuild of the '85... *not* a total rebuild ...but, the parts that should be replaced while one has the transmission out and in preparation for the install.

I will attempt to document this as I go along... any opinions, thoughts and/or advise will be greatly appreciated!

Thanks

dennis

Slow going... the wife has me on spring cleaning duty. I didn't order the parts until yesterday so it will probably be about a week before I get started on freshening up the tranny. I have new K1, K2, B1 and Modulator... here are some of the other parts I'm going to replace...

O-Ring - Kickdown Solenoid, (17.5 X 18.7 mm) Part #: 008-997-31-48-MBZ

Transmission Pump O-Ring, (144 X 3.5 mm) Part #: 016-997-14-48-MBZ

Transmission mount Part #: 123-240-25-18-MY-INT (Trying Meyle here)

Flex disc Part #: 123-410-00-15-M57 (Trying febi/bilstein here)

Transmission Filter Kit Part#: 126-277-02-95-MBZ (Trying Meistersatz here)

Here's a shot of the engine and tranny on my welding bench... I taped off all orifices/inlets, pressure washed it then dried it off with the air compressor.

$202.xx including tax & shipping (including both (2) flex disks)... except where noted ...all (GM) Genuine Mercedes parts. I probably could have saved another 50/60 going with third party stuff.

I did. just order all new GM shift bushings... what the heck ...the tranny is out.

The "blue saucer" is probably a good addition on any year. It serves as a "vacuum flow amplifier" between the VCV and transmission modulator. I put one from a 1985 CA on my 1984 300D. It even had factory holes for it on the inner fender. I think it continued in 1986+ cars.

1985's (at least CA) have another device in that plumbing, a vacuum solenoid valve on the firewall. I left it off the 1984. It does something like intercept the Pman signal under high throttle to keep the transmission in a lower gear longer. I vaguely recall past posts that explain it, but didn't research so please nobody flame me.

You are correct, my 10/84 SD has the UFO vacuum amplifier, also. It was standard on the 86 and 87 SDL.

10/84 was at least during the changeover period to 85. I have an 84SD and 85SD and 85 parts car. Lots of things are different. The electric mirror has a different connector, 85 has ABS brakes, blue saucer, electric head rests, bowden cables are different, slight differences in the fuse box etc.

There was a change in the rubber boot surrounding the shift lever. You need to look up by VIN if you want one. They are inexpensive.

This is the 1st I've heard of the blue saucer being "better". Other threads & trans adjustment articles have said things more like "pita, hassle, difficult to have function correctly".

Naw... *not* difficult at all ...the '85 Vacuum Transducer is awesome! It's not like I don't have a perfectly sound '84 tranny available (with vacuum transducer). The shift quality of the '85 is a touch above (IMHO). Fortunately, I have a half dozen perfectly functioning vacuum transducers tucked away for future use... there is even one on the most recently *wrecked* '84. I Love My Wife!
