What hardness of material is the rubber in the w126's...

door strikes? Will the same materials work which work on mounts and other rubber homemade parts?

I'm satisfied of that.

The materials don't come in one ounce volumes. I can't afford to by half a dozen different quarts of that stuff to try and find the hardness which will close the latches and not break due to being too brittle. That would cost half a grand. I wouldn't live long enough to break even by selling them.

I think I have some strikes I can send you. Probably just need the drivers, right?

Grease your door latches to make the striker last longer.

That's very kind of you. I'm OK right now with strikes. Thank you very much.

I was hoping to learn to use the materials to produce some of the parts. This seemed like one that I could handle and which has a small overhead. The goal was to give me, an old man, something productive to do and return the favor to those here who have helped me learn about Mercedes cars.

Good advise. Lowering a window in a tight car lessen the need to slam the door too. The rubber absorbs some of the blow but slamming the door due to poor alignment or tight cabins suggest great impact on the strike's rubber part.

This might be easier and cheaper than you think

You can call up a lab and ask them to test one of the strikers on a Shore durometer. It will probably take 5 min. Once you have the hardness number, you can buy a quart of the urethane mix and determine by volume how hard or soft you want the rubber to be: from 25 (chewing gum) to 100 (really hard)

Any college chem lab will also have one, or university eng center.

No need to spend a lot unless you want to go into business. I may be doing this in the near future.

Also look on Wikipedia for the sections on "durometer (Shores, vs others)" or "hardness of rubber"

The Net may have some people that will test a sample received in the mail and report results. You can shop around.

Read this article first, it may make your choices faster and cheaper: http://ptc1.com/what_is_durometer.htm

Good luck!

Woo Hoo! I go a little brain dead in the winter. I guess I slow down body and mind since I'v gotten old.

I might send a few items off for testing and try to build a little database to post here for reference. The day will come when quality parts won't be available for the 123s and 126 models. A few are getting difficult to find now.

I'm in pretty good shape on most rubber parts now and I have this w126 gas to diesel conversion project which I expect to keep me hopping through the spring.

Thank you for the help.

Any updates on this?

Am looking for some quality rubber replacements for the strikers also, and have toyed with the idea of fabricating my own.

The ones off the internet are junk, fall apart after a few years, or less.

No, I'll get on that this week. Thanks for reminding me.
