Thank you.

I'll try delivery values and return hoses first, along with new fuel filters.

You might considering having the injectors redone first, especially if they're old. New nozzles can have a pretty profound impact on how the car runs and drives. If the nailing is still there, you can move on to DV's at that point.

I was hoping that the valve seal ring and washer replacement would be a cheap fix to the injector knock. I didn't wanna hshell out the money for injector nozzles and having a reputable diesel injection shop calibrate each one.

I have my eyes on Monark injector nozzles. Heck, at that point I might as well buy a calibration/diagnostic injector and call it a day!

Look up Greazzer on this forum. He can rebuild your injectors and does a great job. He's in Columbia SC and done both sets of my IDI injectors.

Hmm, not too far from Virginia. I'll definitely go to him.

Do I PM for rates or could you PM costs?

Also, I lost a few valve cover bolts. Where can I find replacements?

The valve cover bolts are M8 1.25 thread pitch. Length is 20 or 25mm, I forget which one. If you have a real hardware store nearby, take one in and get replacements.

Considering all the parts you've lost so far, you might want to take a look at your storage method when you have things apart. A muffin tin goes a long way to keeping parts organized when you tear things down. If you're replacing lost parts all the time, it can get expensive and frustrating, much easier and cheaper not to lose things in the first place.

PM Greazzer and tell him what you're after. He'll tell you anticipated cost and estimated turn-around time.

Thank you.

My brother and I are stumped at how to approach this knocking issue.

When running on DP, the engine is crazy quiet.

I can hear a cylinder missing at idle. It's like a hiccup, huff, or cough.

It smokes at idle. However when revved up to 900+rpm the smoke, missing, and knocking disappears.

Also the engine doesn't smoke under load/driving.

We cracked multiple injectors and the knocking never went away completely.

Also injector 4 is leaking at the body.

Looks like we have to bite the bullet and get a whole set of Bosio or Monark injector nozzles.

Then we'll also get delivery value seals and washers.

Honestly, we are just scared to misdiagnose.

People argue that diesel engines are simpler. Yes they are but I had no idea how complex their fuel system is compared to a gas engine.

I'm going to do a little experiment.

Going to shoot a video of a cold start on regular fuel and diesel purge.

Car smoked blue like mad on regular fuel and stops on diesel purge.

It boggles my mind, do bad injectors really burn oil?

I'll see what happens.

Injection problems can cause "grey" smoke, which can be hard to tell the difference from blue smoke. The smell usually gives it away. Diesel Purge has a very high cetane rating and undergoes a more complete combustion than pump diesel does. It can be a useful tool diagnosing injection or timing issues since those problems can go away when running on straight DP.

Injectors can't burn oil.. It's grey smoke your distinguishing as blue. If it smells like fuel, it's fuel. If it smells like oil, it's oil. Funny thing, I learned on diesel engines and I understand them much better than gas engines, and think gas engines are much more complicated systems.

Yup you guys are right, I put my hand on the tailpipe.
Smelled it, smelled like diesel that's unburned.

Let my let my brother smell my arm for a 2nd opinion, he agrees to fuel as well.

Parts are flying in as we speak. Monark injector nozzles, delivery valve washer, o ring, and spring as well.
Greazer will calibrate them.

I also got two magnetic bowls because I keep losing bolts.

I'll update once everything is done.

Pretty sure I just ruined the injection pump, the little pieces moved around. One tiny piece came out.
The piece above the calibration barrel, the very tip top thing.

How much would it cost to recalibrate the injection pump?

This might be the end.

Those are the delivery valves. Reassemble and carry on with life. There's nothing there that can ruin the IP unless you get a ton of dirt or something in there or leave a part out. All the sensitive stuff is "down below" and is very difficult to remove with the IP in the car.

Well aren't the delivery valves messed up then?
