It isn't a craigslist vehicle, met the guy by knocking on his door. He's pretty firm. Also not a lot of interest in the car. I do have other cars, but always end up with a couple extra.

The w210 with 500k running good is a 2k vehicle on the high side IMO.
If you needed a, keep your fingers crossed vehicle, for cheap, for a longer commute than average thats a coin toss, and a not to expensive gamble. It could last ten miles or 110k miles.
Keep in mind, as the saying goes, "the most expensive vehicle on the planet is a cheap MB".

I'd probably never fix it to sell it, more likely repair the rockers and engine issue and drive it into the ground. I sold my '98 e300 with 350k for $3700 with a rebuilt trans, new top end and timing chain and glow plugs. I also did extensive rust repair on the rockers on my time and painted it on my time. There is money for these cars with high mileage. My neighbor drives it every day and put 2k on it in a month.

Thank God the car was parked in front of my house when it decided to self destruct. Had I been going 60-75 mph, I would not be here writing this post!!!!!

That's a shame, luckily I've never seen a w210 do that. I've checked mine and they're spotless on both my cars. However the rockers are rusty.

If I had the choice between two similar cars with similar prices, and one has say, a recent trans rebuild, I would buy that one. If it does have recent repairs to any parts that are sellable, you could possibly make all your money back right away, and have the rest of the car as profit. Having a parts car available is of great benefit. My friend bought an identical car as his for parts, and only a month after he needed a water pump housing, fan and radiator. The parts car yielded those parts, and they would have cost as much as he paid for the whole car. Anything else needed from the car is now FREE! That being said, if I were in your position, had the money, and had the place to park the car, I would go buy the car NOW. Just my .02...........Rich

I'm thinking of it rich. Very strongly. I'll likely tow it to my driveway next week if I need to. I have two other e300s that could always use a parts car, but I'd probably end up saving this car too.

As someone suggested, the seller needs to have a few tire kickers not even make offers before $500 sounds like the best offer. I say this from a locale in which there's usually a selection of rust free MB Diesels on Craigslist. It's not 'should I get this one' but 'which one should I get'

I'd love to have the option of rust free diesels. Unfortunately he's a guy who's just sitting on the car deciding whether he wants to dig into it himself provided he finds the time or sells it as is for 1k. His attiude with me is he made an easy $400 off selling a hood, fenders and a headlight so the car is worth 1k in parts alone. I probably would have the same attitude.
