bad wreck on I95

my son and i this week were on a road trip fla-ct approx 1300 mi.
i was driving a 94 chev cavalier, he's in an 89 vw jetta
both cars fairly well loaded (not overloaded).

scene is I95 north in s.carolina and my son is followng me at a safe distance - we're both doing the speed limit 70mph in clear weather 5:30 pm. all of a sudden in my rear view i see the jetta drift off the passing lane onto to hard shoulder and then take a 90 degree high speed right turn off the highway- I tell you I thought the absolute worst. pulled over in right shoulder reversed back to point of entry into the woods. by then a couple of other guys stopped and were running into the ditch/bushes along the side of the road. i rushed down and found a fairly dazed but un-hurt 21 yr old. car was totalled as it had rolled after hitting a tree. the back window was smashed in but the roof didn't cave at all. that is a credit to german technology and safety built in. he walked away.

turns out the hard shoulders in s. carolina are at an angle compared to the road surface and if you get your wheels in there the tendency is to over correct and a less experienced driver can lose it at that moment.

you can get a new car but not a new head and my son and i agree he's the luckiest kid in the world right now- i'm sure glad i could call my wife and tell her our son was coming home alive and in one piece.

be careful, safe, and god bless

bob

That is strange, I was heading up I-287 today and on one of the traffic information signs said there was a very bad accident on I-95 in Danbury, CT and 95 was closed, alerting us to take I-287 over than Tappan Zee to I-684 to I-84 into New England.
