Yes low voltage resulting from losses in inadequate extension cords can kill electric motors. You should have a 14 gauge extension cord and only as long as basically needed. A twelve gauge extension cord would be even better.

A lot of extension cords are only 16 gauge. Out of curiosity I just looked up the specs on one of our surge protection multi plug items. It looks like a rating of 1650 watts and that indicates probably 14 gauge wires in the cord.

I always tell people not to use extension cords with compressors, use a longer hose instead.

Skip the power strip for ANY high current draw device. That includes laundry equipment, pressure washers, vacuum cleaners, and yes - air compressors. The power strip can handle a TOTAL of 15A, but the outlets are generally so cheap that they can't handle half that. Add in the high starting current of an induction motor or high continuous draw of something like a pressure washer or vacuum cleaner and you're talking about a serious power loss and a shortcut to starting a fire. I've seen it happen MANY times.

Unless you're powering your TV and home stereo, leave the power strip in the junk drawer. Use a #12 extension cord AND NOTHING LESS if you need to extend power to an air compressor. The starting current is very high on a compressor, running a small extension cord shortens the life of the starting components dramatically and risks a fire.

Even if the motor is shot, and smoke coming from it definitely means damage was done even if the caps are replaced, you can likely replace the motor without replacing the whole compressor.

Reminds me, I need a new belt for my compressor.

It can release a puff of smoke when the cap fails with no damage to the windings if the motor is shut down promptly.

Any recommendations for a replacement? Would need to be 120v.

If I'm honest with myself, I mainly use it for tire inflation. But after getting used to a decent compressor, there's no going back to those inflators that take forever.

Thanks.

Check out the link below to a variety of air compressors, if you have any questions; please let us know.
