well, maybe this is a little embarrassing, but I went to the locksmith to get a brass copy in the meantime, and they were testing my lock and keys, my older brass key wasn't working, and my mercedes issued steel key was, then they sprayed the lock with WD-40, and now the brass key is working. not sure how long it will last, so I'm still glad I did the research to find steel blanks, i'm still going to get them to not have to worry about brass shavings jamming things up, that might be the cause of the problem to begin with.

also now that it is greased up, it actually is easier to turn the mercedes key, not that I thought it was stiff before, but once it's loose it's really noticeable, so maybe the plastic wouldn't break…? we'll see

The plastic head on my steel key didn't last very long either. I replaced it with wood -- Make a wooden key head. Its not as pretty anymore -- the epoxy has acquired a coating of grime over the years -- but it still works fine and hasn't broken yet.

The plastic snap-on key heads that MB uses are just them being cheap -- our Volvo also has steel keys, but with hard plastic, molded-on heads that don't break off.

i had doubts about the glue in the wood getting nasty over time, thanks for confirming.

i really hate unnecessary plastic to begin with but i think i'll ask MB classic center for 1 last plastic head, but not really use that key, just keep it for posterity, and order the steel blanks and use those.

Well today I finally went to a lock shop and had 2 of the brass key blanks turned into Trunk Keys and am entirely happy that both worked.

A 60ish year old Man cut the Keys on what looked lie a 1950s type Key cutting machine which they had 3 off right by the customer counter.
