You don't see it very often, so when people do see it, it is quite a spectical worth noting.
2 or more Mercedes is cool - when you see 3-5 Mercedes all in a line following each other, now That is a Sight! Heads Do Turn! You get a lot of double/triple takes from everyone on the road and on the side of it! Drive a nice old Mercedes down a 2 lane road and watch all those old timers take double takes so many times it is a wonder they don't get dizzy! :-) A few of the younger generations look too. In this area when my brother follow each other, we get lots of looks! His car, a 1985 500 SEL European with the special European headlights and alloy wheels and me in my Apple Green 1974 240D, yeah we get lots of looks. Once, we were following two other Mercedes on the highway. You want to talk about everyone looking! But that time I had my 78 240D. Here in Michigan plates are rated Price wise by weight for vehicles 1979 and older. 1980 and above is rated by the original cost of the car. So, it pays to own an older vehicle. Those poor folks lucky enough to drive a vehicle in the 2000's pay very dearly for that little square stick'em tag on that plate! Upwards of $300 dollars! My old-timer 1978 is only 32 dollars and so is my F-250 Camper Special Ford truck! And that 1974, they must have just gone with the Ohio ratings, still cheap! I left that Ohio plate on the front end. For those readers in Ohio or Michigan, you know what that plate means! WAR! So I have a Michigan plate on the back and a Ohio on the front. Ohio cops are nicer that way! :-) |

Just registered 2 pre-1984 cars since February. It is DEFINATELY a benifit to having an older more experienced car!

Got it home
Ok, not to sit here and gush all over about how great a deal I got and how the rest of you missed out. Went down to Naples today and looked at the car. Had talked to the owner and he had told me the car had zero oil leaks, great compression, yada yada yada. So I get there today and he had left the keys in the car in the parking lot of the place he works at. (boat captain) I look under the car and believe it or not no oil leaks are seen. OK so far so good. Get in and find the keys and it starts right up. Sounds very good. Took it for a drive and it drove very well. Hard to believe. Took it back to the lot and opened the hood. Very clean looking, but I am hard to please Noticed the A/C compressor is not in the loop so this means the belts have been switched around. (sold without working A/C) notice all kids of slop in the A/C pulley so no wonder they have been taken out of the loop. Also notice the drivers window went down no problem, going back up big problem. Not a big deal, just a pain in the ass. Drove it home. So here are the things to fix...
A/C Compressor Drivers side window door locks Front dome light Odometer windshield seal rear window seal Transmission shift seems soft Other than that the car is very solid. Ran great on the way home, but it is a SLUG compared to the 300d! Great teen car Under the hood is LOTS of room to work. There is a post here on the top speed of a 240, and this one was running 85, however I called my wife who was on my tail and asked her what the 300d speedo was reading and she said 76 so I think the 240 is a bit optimistic which is great for a teen car. I have looked at the 300d speedo and checked it with my GPS and it is dead nuts on up to 100 mph. The kid loves it, said it looked like a gross "green bean" till she was told it was going to be her car and not something Dad brought home for himeself, go figure. She will be learning how to change fluids, adjust valves, check tire pressure, oil level, tranny fluids etc. |
