The most fascinating part of this car lies in the engine tech. BMW already has a triple-turbocharged I6, but in order to eke out every possible inch of performance without moving to a V8, its latest engine features not three, but four turbochargers.
Sounds reliable and easy to maintain.

Wow, this is a beastly diesel.

But I died a little inside when I figured out it's not coming to the U.S. due to America's preference for gassers.

Performance diesels are always interesting. I wonder what it would sound like with the downpipe open?
Probably like a jet turbine with those 4 turbo chargers.

That was sorta my thought. Strikes me that one turbo and first class intercooling would be preferable. Upon searching, it appears that there is an intercooler, couldn't find much about it.

But I have to wonder about the hp gained per international unit of complexity. At some point I'm OK with 0 to 60 in 5 seconds instead of 4.

Clearly you're not in BMW's target demographic.

I dig the hell out of my E30s. One on the edge of life or death - I may bring it back, it has a working cruise control and crack free dash after all - the other amazingly strong at 440k. The engine a paragon of simple reliability -bullet proof it's often said. Single cam, belt driven, no turbo. Only about 8 seconds 0-60, oh cruel world.

I've driven newer 3 series and I don't like them as much.

I had an m42 powered e30 for a few years. Fun to drive, reliable easy to wrench on but it had the structural integrity of a wet noodle.

This thing is a far cry from the e30.

Well, of course it is. But ... the structural integrity of a wet noodle? Not sure what you're getting at there.

Jack up one corner and try opening and closing the doors on that side.

No, that's my point. The w201 and w124 from the same era were far more solid.

This sort of surprises me, I assumed that as far as turbocharger technology has come this many turbos becomes unnecessary. With VGT, VNT, ball bearings, lightweight impellers, much more efficient intercooling, etc you would use less turbos, not more. On the 335i BMW went from twin turbo to single.

Though I suppose some things are done just to say they'd do it. And there is certainly a market of people who think its cool and different and will pay the price tag to have something so bizarre just to have it. So I guess that works too.

The w124 was so far ahead of it's time in terms of chassis stiffness. IIRC it was rated at 18hz, and nothing from that time period was even close to that.

The electrically assisted turbos that will be entering the market soon promise to be game changers. There will still be lag, but knocked down to about 0.3 seconds - even from no-load conditions.

You've just described the vast majority of (new) BMW owners in the area where I live. Way more money (and need for status) than brains. If you put a gussied up interior into a Hyundai Sonata and put a BMW badge on it, I surmise the 95% of the owners wouldn't know the difference.
