300D Auto Trans Fluid Capacity

I am going to change the filter & fluid in my trans today, and I have been advised here to replace the fluid with Mobil 1 (synthetic ?).
The question is how many quarts do I need to buy ?
This stuff is expensive & I want to get the first amount the first time.

Thanks !
Robert

Hi Robert, the haynes manual says 5.1 US qts.I think it was a little more with the torque converter.I found when it was cold the dipstick 'just' showed fluid. To get an accurate reading make sure the fluid is hot, after at least 30 miles on the highway.Good luck.:)

Have at least 7 qts on hand when you change it. Drain the pan, change the filter and drain the torque converter. Put 4 qts in, crank it up an run it, add another qt, then drive it. After running for about 15-20, minutes check it on a level surface, in park with the engine running. You will probably have to add at least another qt. or so.
I would recommend (meant to say NOT) going with the Mobil 1 synthetic at this milage. If it is operating/shifting smoothly then stay with what you have been running.

Just a little FYI. I recently received a copy of MB Factory Approved Products and VERY surprisingly under approved transmission fluids, Mobil and Mobil 1 ATF is not listed. Castrol, Chevron, Citgo, Exxon Superflow, Havoline, Texaco, Pennzoil, Quakerstate, Sunoco, Unocal, and Valvoline are the only ATF listed as approved for MB automatic transmissions. This list was as of Nov. 2001. Mobil 1 motor oil is approved and required for FSS cars, but their transmission fluid doesn't make the grade. Things that make you go Hmmmmmm. BTW I changed my ATF to Mobil 1 also, but, before I got this listing from Mercedes. I'll admit I have thought of dumping it and using one of the approved ATFs
