No but it would not surprise me if they were offered in Europe. I am pretty sure never offered here with the 616 motor.

I have never seen one and I have never heard anyone talk about one.

I am assuming the drivetrain would drop right in ????

Thanks Richard !

I have a superb drivetrain coming out of my project car and I have been on the prowl for a 300CD. Found one locally for $350.00 with a blown engine but it had 2 spots of rust. Very fixable, but when I say NO RUST, NO DAMAGE (Wrecks), that is what I am really shooting for.

I am guessing the 240D drivetrain would be direct swap, drop right in endeavor ?

Everything would drop in..... except for the driveshaft.

Why would the DS be different if swapping the entire drivetrain?

Cd's body length (wheelbase) is shorter. Plus, if I am not mistaken, the driveshaft center bearing is not in the same position.

I have seen the swap done twice that I can remember, with your access to parts and knowledge of the 123 chassis the swap should be trivial.

It is my understanding that Mercedes never offered a 240CD from the factory. However 230C and 230CE gassers exists which should have approximately the right length driveshaft you would need. The 230C and 230CE were euro only but I'm sure the measurements and part numbers are out there to check to see if that driveshaft front section doesn't overlap with something sold in the US.

The wheelbase is I believe about 4" shorter and the roofline is 2" lower requiring a lower cushion in the front seats. You can notice if you are used to 123 sedans when you sit behind the wheel it feels high. Going from another random car you'd never notice anything.

If you get one be advised that the rear body has to drain water from around the movable windows. In a sedan of course they are in the door instead so its a place for potential rust if the drains are not kept clear.

It took me years to find the OM616 engine with SLS casted head engine. They exist but by far the rarest of the rare. So, I am guessing that maybe there could have been a Euro 240CD? Thanks for the snappy VT220D.

Once I pull the current Drivetrain from my car, and if I scout a coupe, I am guessing that per the comments, it should drop right in with 2 simple mods: DS & minor wiring harness.

The SLS was offered on all models, I suspect, in Europe.

I spent years trolling German Ebay, et al and only once saw the 240D SLS engine and it was selling for a staggering 4,000 Euros and that was when a Euro was worth something. And it was not a rebuild ...It appeared to be the typical greasy JY engine ...
