Extra fuel tank?
Have seen several 300SD's for sale that had an "extra" 40 gal fuel tank located in the trunk in addition to the stock tank. Was this an aftermarket piece or available new? Any info on this would be appreciated.
Thanks, Hugh |

It's an aftermarket thing. Occasionally you will see one on ebay. I assume you are referring to the W116 300SD's, because I have never seen one for a W126 300SD.

These cars already have a cruising range of 500+ miles, what more could one want. Adding another tank does 2 things, eats up trunk space, and it adds weight, which inturn cuts into your fuel economy. I don't know about diesel, but gas weights about 6 lbs a gallon. So a 40 gallon tank adds 240 lbs to your car's weight.

Ditto on Rick's response. I like the ride of my car but do you really need to drive for 10 hours straight before stopping for diesel fuel?? My kidneys couldn't take it!!
