And, of course you need the prophylactic device.

Valve Stem Seals
THANK YOU for the details and photos ! .
I thought you'd need to remove the cam shaft to get clearance to remove the valve spring retains, but no ? . FWIW, I know several guys who had these seals replaced on their OM616/617 engines and the blue exhaust smoke diminished considerably so don't say it makes no difference because it does . I'm always tying to learn and you guys here seem to know more hands - on DIY than others, THANK YOU for answering my endless questions .

Of course new seals make some difference if the old are really bad. Just not very much in comparison to the same situation on a gas engine.
There is no way you could have a Mercedes gas engine car. With this many miles and the original seals. Without a signifigant cloud of smoke at times. Their gas engines actually suck the oil down the intake guides. |

You might need to screw some springs out counterclockwise, but they all come out without messing with the camshaft.
Also, you can adjust the valves all the way down so the rockers come out (and go back in) easier. I'm not really trying to clear up a smoke problem, just had some seals lying around, the engine was open, and my seals were 35 years old. Eventually it will have been a good idea.

Okay, here's a follow-up. I ordered a new Victor Reinz kit, part number 617 586 04 05 from an online vendor hoping to get a set like what I pulled off the car. What I got was part number 617 050 00 67, same part number as the Meistersatz set with the metal intake seals, but this new set from Victor Reinz is the hard rubber set. Apparently, the part numbers are interchangeable?
Also worth mentioning is that the Victor Reinz set doesn't come with the plastic thread shields. Just seals in a box. I still have the leftovers from the Meistersatz set, so it's not a big deal. In a YouTube video, our buddy Kent recommended using wide Scotch tape if you got a set that didn't include the shields.

I use a breaker bar, short extension, 1/2 to 3/8 adapter, and a 8MM hex bit socket. Torque when replacing them is 38 Newton Meters, which is 28 foot pounds.
When in TDC and the nuts adjusted all the way down, the first rocker set just came right out. The back set popped out when I moved the engine a little. I'd also recommend getting a 14mm ratcheting box wrench that pivots (or that is angled) so that you can get those adjustment nuts up and down the valve stems quicker. As a matter of fact, here's a photo...

One more thing if you're going to take off the fan to turn the engine. During reassembly, if you loosen the alternator and adjust some slack into those belts, after the first fan bolt tightens up, the pulley will move, bringing the next hole up to the top.

Cool! .
I learned that replacing the water pump but these little details are what makes the difference between good and average DIY tech help . No one ever mentioned removing the cam followers so I couldn't firgure out how the adjusters ever had space to be removed before . Your level of detail here is how I write my Tech Reports on older cars, always very popular as I write (and display using pictures) how the job actually goes, not the dry wording FSM's use . I'm still looking for the right way to R&R the Injection Pump ~ I struggled mightily with that inner 13MM ATF nut, cut my hand etc....
