OM 606 ball bearings and retainer found in engine oil

I found the following ball bearings and what looks like part of a bearing retainer in the engine oil. I presumed it was the vacuum pump but when I took the vacuum pump I didn't notice a place where these could be. I have enclosed photos of the pump and the parts found in the oil. I took 5 ball bearings out of the oil drain pan and the oil. I dumped the rest of the oil so not sure how many were there. I am planning on gluing some magnets to the oil pan. You can see the attached photos.

Inquiry, What ELSE that lives above the Oil Pan has B.B. (s)

That sure LOOKS like the "David" of Vacuum Pumps. (SLINGS Bearings)

AND you gotta ask your self "What Else has these type of Bearings?"

Picture Quality prohibits an actual diagnosis of the Vacuum Pump.

BUT, I sure wouldn't run that Pump Until I had POSITIVE Proof
that it still had all it's bearings intact.

A pump may have failed in the past of course. With the missing parts ignored. Inspection of the current pump may tell the story.

current pump looks fine to me

The current pump looks fine to me. I bought a new pump anyways since the current pump looks quite old and I read that they failed.

x2 what barry12345 said. This is a pump I replaced just in time:

Good side -

Not so good side -

The pump in the pictures from nelsoncor has a cover plate held on by screws, which is the improved design that should not dump bearings.

The pump in the pictures from Sixto is the original flawed design, which can dump bearings. The cover plate is held on by crimps at the edges.

Has anyone ever attempted to install new bearings? As a preventative measure. Are the originals bearings just a friction fit or secured in some other way? I have never taken one of these vacuum pumps apart.

barry12345, PM an address and the pump in the pictures will be on its way to you to dissect.

Aside from fitting better bearings, cover attachment and sealing has to be improved on original style pumps.

It looks like the bearings then did not come from the vacuum pump. And the vacuum pump looks quite old. Presumably the bearings have not been rolling in the engine for years. So where did the bearings and race come from.

You could probably work out the radius using the piece pictured, then look for something that diameter engine wise - is it a 910 or 962 engine ?

At a guess, is this not the oil pump shim/spacer?

A tangental question:

Did all production 606 engines (either .910 or .962) have the early bearing design?

Or, if the revised pumps were installed on later engines, does anyone know when?

hi, This is a 1995 Mercedes E300 with the OM606.910 engine. This engine is actually a rebuild that replaced the original engine in the car. They hit a brick with the original engine and the oil pan ruptured dumping all the oil.

Let me look at the oil pump diagram to see if something like this. It looks like that one part might have been a cage that held the bearings. Maybe 12 bearings or so in total? I have not worked out the radius. There is no noise coming from the engine and it appears to run fine. Although I don't trust it until this issue is resolved.

I don't know about reciprocating pumps. From mid-97 US 606s have a rotary (vane?) pump. The front covers are different before you start getting ideas.
