Rear Headrest Update

For those who subscribe to a similar brand of car-geekdom as I do:

Last night I finished the rear headrest project on my '84 300D/T, and it was thankfully far easier than I anticipated, thanks to the parts that I was able to source. I got a complete euro rear seatback with headrests in dubious condition (which was okay, since i just needed the metal and plastic bits) in quick time from benzsalvage.com, and brand-spanking-new palomino tex headrests which I sourced out of the Star from a guy who never used them on the back seat of his wagon. I guess what would have made it better would be finding a rear seatback with headrests in the right color/style... Good luck.

Anyway, here's how it went:

1. Transplanted tex upholstery/foam onto sedan rear headrest frame (VERY different shaped posts).

2. Removed 2 metal braces from euro seat - installed on mine. (They hold 2 of the 4 mounting brackets)

3. Removed other 2 mounting brackets from euro seat and installed on mine.

4. Removed 4 plastic grommets from euro seat back top.

5. Located and cut 4 holes in my seatback for grommets, installed grommets and retaining clips.

6. Inserted headrests.

The only problem I had in the whole process was that I was maybe 1/4 off (Front/back) on the location of the mounting holes, but as you can see, it still looks factory original and unless you know what to look for you really can't tell.

I *love* the look, but again, I'm that kind of geek. It goes well with the euro headlights.

Looks nice. How much did everything cost, if you don't mind telling? I bet no one's seen a W123 interior like this before...

If that doesn't work, click here http://www.geocities.com/wyldrozes/dopeinterior.jpg

I like the "dope-interior", but it probably cost a fair sight more than my $50 for the headrests, and $121 for the rear seat back, delivered. And of course there's my time, which is invaluable....

Totally worth it, to me.

If you cut holes for the grommets, how would you prevent the seat fabric from tearing and stretching around the hole?

Damn!
That is a nice W123 interior!

There was a 280E automatic back home in Jakarta that I looked at. It had 18" Brabus wheels (the one that almost look like 8-hole wheels but more holes), the WHOLE interior was covered in leather....

dash, shift knob, seats, trims, etc.

The sound system was killer too.

the asking price was about $20,000!

Look at your front seat headrests, the principle is the same. The way the grommets work is that they grab both sides of the fabric, they don't just sit on top, if you will. That way, the fabric is nicely held in place.
