It works as advertised in the YouTube video I linked yesterday. I was able to make it blink the turn signals and it shows that the turn signals draw close to 5 A  when lit. And I honked the horn, of course you have to go back into the menu to tell it to stop.

There are some online cautions about using a battery charger when in an extended session. I believe it, the battery dropped to nearly 12.0 V before I got done. The vehicle provides all the power for the multiplexer, and you also have to toggle the key on and off repeatedly as you go through the process, which also cycles your glow plugs.

Most of the W210 menu operations run through the HHT emulation software so it has to pull up a side window to load that. You can either click, arrow, or press the Fn keys on the keyboard to navigate through these menus.

I was reading around in the WIS and it makes mention of a feature on the non rain sensor equipped 210 wipers. If you have the switch on position II and you slow below single digit mph (like coming up to a light) the wipers automatically fall into intermittent mode until you speed up again. Or if you're already on intermittent then the time constant is increased. However my car does not seem to do this. There is a note in the WIS that says this feature may be disabled through version coding. I searched around the EIS and Front SAM menus and could not find any options to change this. Anybody seen or hear of this feature??

I did find the rain sensor equipped field, so if I ever figure out how to install a rain sensor then I know how to tell the OHP and SAM it's there. However from what I understand it requires a special version of the windshield with the lens factory bonded to the glass, plus the electronics that go behind the lens. So that may be a future project whenever it's time for a new windshield.

Also I would like to do the following, which I suspect are part of a version coding menu somewhere:
- change the dashboard clock to 24 hour mode (I prefer 24 hour time)
- change the outside temp and climate control temp displays to degrees C (keeping with the Euro theme, and to match the water temperature gauge)

If I get a chance to get connected to the W164 tonight or this weekend (it's trying to storm again tonight) then I will post more updates. Being that the W164 and the W211 share a lot of systems I am going to try to see if the flashing brake lights on hard braking option is there.

I've had an SDS for ~7 years, been super handy with all of the newer MBs I've had (and helped work on). I'm actually looking to update my setup to a new unit with SD Connect so I can do some work on chassis like the W212 and newer.

Some observations -

-Connect a battery charger, half of the cars I have done diag work/programming on have weak batteries... Low voltage will sometimes cause coding issues, or throw errors in modules.
-Clear any codes the module might have before you try to do any programming. I haven't seen it happen personally yet, but I've heard people say that sometimes a module won't take coding changes unless it's error free
-Don't be afraid to open menus, it will always ask you if you'd like to carry out coding changes if you did accidentally click something
-Some modules might have a different software version than other cars, so some features may or may not be available to you

If you've got any Q's, ask. I've used the SDS on many different cars, and also have some hands on experience with an actual MB SDS that was able to carry out SCN coding.

Can you save the configuration of an entire SAM for future should you need it?

From what I've found using the HHT on Star on a 97 C202 / E320 / R129. All version coding is most likely in the modules and you are only using star to select what program to run rather than copy / paste.

The climate control version coding can be changed without HHT or Star so that tends to bear that out.

I've poked around the instrument cluster EEPROM and was able to turn on all sorts of non USA stuff like speed warnings and other alerts. This tells me that the version coding lives in the processor as there is no way I'm altering the operating system, just what the EEPROM tells it to run.

Justin, are you aware of any manuals or documentation that may be of help to those of us getting acquainted with Xentry? I've done some searching but all I can find are scattered treads on how to make a few individual changes.

Thanks.

Jay_bob, could I trouble to check something for me....since we have exactly the same version of Xentry? I am finding that, when I go under any car system to developer data, actuations, user-defined actuations, I get an error message. Initiatlly I was exploring under Drive because I wan't to see things like torque settings, pedal curve, vmax, etc... But I couldn't get there. And then I discovered I have the same inability in all car systems.

Gordy says that different versions of Xentry can have different routes to a given menu....but no luck so far.

Thanks.

shertex 06-24-2017 09:27 AM

It's sounding as though there may be a flaw on the 09/2014 version of Xentry....others seems to be experiencing the same difficulties as I am. Will try to get resolved over on the MHHAuto forum, where they eat, sleep, drink, and breathe Xentry.

Update:

I did find out how to make the dash display degrees C and 24 hour time, it is in the Adaptations on the instrument cluster. You have to set it for Canada instead of the US. However I did not leave it there because I wasn't sure how it would affect the mileage accumulation or the speedometer.

I found the status display for the variable windshield wipers under the menu for the EIS (key switch). This seems like an odd place until you realize how they work. When you twist the stalk it switches different resistors onto a control line that gets read by the circuit board in the EIS. This turns the reading into CAN messages that go to the front SAM. The Front SAM provides relay coil signals to the K40/4 Left side relay module, which actually switches the motor.

This is a read only status display. Does anyone know how to actually change the value?

Considering purchasing one of these

I will have my rebuilt SBC module next week, and I need to get the actuation count reset. My local independent Euro auto repair shop charges $250 for this service. I am thinking about purchasing a STAR DAS system, as I am sure I will have other uses for it since there are at least four cars in my family/friends that will benefit from the availability of this tool. I have a hard time justifying paying $250 to hook my car up to their computer just to reset the SBC. Spending more on a STAR system seems like a better deal in the long run, and could basically pay for itself with four similar service costs. I sent a message to Gordy's Gadgets through ebay to find out if a system is available for purchase. As with others, I am leery about buying one from China. There is another vendor in New York with a similar system, but seems to be more $ than Gordy. However, if Gordy has none available, I suppose that is the best deal. Thoughts?

Wait for Gordy to have one. Works out of the box is worth every penny. Customer support in English can’t be beat. If SSD is an option, it’s worth every penny in reduced boot time. The nice thing about cloned SDS is it comes with WIS and EPC.

Check with Module Master...I believe they reset the count for you, i.e. that it's internal to the unit.

Really? If so, that would be great. I will call them. Thanks, Rich

Oh, just saw this thread.

Rich, if you're interested I can send you my SDS to reset the actuation count on your SBC unit. Mine does have developer mode, which is needed to access the SBC actuation count.

I also have the directions that I can send along as well.

Yes you can, but only in developer mode. I have to do this on my W164 - my current rear SAM doesn't have the correct connector for the trailer hitch, so I've bought a used one to copy my coding to. After that's done, you just "turn on" the hitching settings.

Under developer mode, you "write" the settings to a file, then "read" the file back program the unit.

Yes, there's a few documents out there. What specifically are you looking to do? I have a bunch for the W211 and some for other chassis.

This is true, but you could also be timing out while trying to access certain menus. I've had this happen a few times, sometimes due to low voltage.

If you need support, then definitely go this route. I had to set one up from scratch after the drive took a crap, and not having support made it a huge pain in the rear. Also, EPC and WIS are super helpful, especially when troubleshooting. On Xentry, you can go straight to the WIS document for errors to help diag issues.

Sorry I didn't see the questions here earlier, hopefully this helps some of you. If you're in or around the SF Bay Area or Sacramento, you're welcome to come by and hook up to my SDS.

Thanks, but I found out that it will be reset by the rebuilder in the SBC unit itself. The only thing I will need to do is install it and bleed the brakes.

The eBay seller finally replied, and he has no idea what I was talking about. He said he only sells used MAC equipment, and has never heard of this system. I don't know what to think about this.....Rich
EDIT: this is the text of the message: Hi There!
Thank you for your email. I think you have the wrong seller.
I don't know what STAR DAS is---never sold I sell refurbished Macs.
Thanks
