W210 OM606 smoke coming from under the plastic beauty panel on the head.

Hi all,

I've got a 1997 e300 with the non-turbo om606. I've got a little bit of smoke coming from under the plastic panel on head. It's coming from a specific area, probably cylinder 5. I haven't torn into it yet, but I'm unfamilar with these motors.

Has anyone experienced this? Is there a gasket that will need to be replaced if I remove the intake cross over tube? I know the pcv is in that area, and i'm not sure if an oil leak can occur at the injector.

The vehicle is new to me, and the only real diesel experience I have is with 6.0 Powerstrokes. I know leaky injector o-rings can cause oil leaks, but the 6.0 uses oil pressure to actuate the injectors.

Thanks!

Also, everything is worthless without pics!

You may have one of the return lines on the injectors leaking. They're rubber hoses and they harden and leak over time. I had one fail on my SDL yesterday, you'd be surprised the mess they can make too.

The Crankcase vent is under there, that may be where the smoke is coming from. It is okay to run the engine without the crossover pipe and cover.
Edit: I could have guessed the color was Smoke Silver, most all were that color. I have two friends wit three between them that are that color.

The PCV on the NA cars is a nightmare of complexity. Also, the plastic and rubber bits get hard and break apart so that's probably where the smoke is coming from.

Pull the cover and see what you got.

Thanks for the direction guys.

I was suspecting the PCV. I don't anticipate a leaky injector because it doesn't smell like diesel in the garage, but it's worth looking into.

I'll report back for future reference when I have time to dive in.

There is no PCV under that cover, but the entire crankcase breather system is under there along with the injectors. The cross over tube must be removed. It has one bolt on the driver side and about 4 on the passenger side. Once you pull it loose, you have a wire and vacuum line attached on the underside. If you don't see the problem you can run the engine with the cover and crossover off to see what is going on.

I removed my cover to try to find which injector was nailing, and with the cover off there was no nailing. I guess a hard line was snapping in the plastic cover. I put the crossover back on and left the cover off. The car has never been so quiet. I did find that a couple of my breather lines were broken where they attached to the intake manifold. I believe I was sucking unfiltered air into the engine there, so check your breather system.

PVC= Positive Crankcase Ventilation (system) or sometimes called "Crankcase Breather System". Both are synonymous, so either one is correct. "There is no PCV under that cover" is not a correct statement. There is what might be construed as a PCV Valve under the cover (saucer shaped black plastic part), so I would say that without a doubt, either way, there is "PCV" under the cover.

Ok. We at least agree that it has a breather system under there. Positive crankcase ventilation has a source of filtered air to the crankcase which this breather system does not have.
