How can we find tiny parts?

I took my power seat buttons off the door panel and lost this round plastic clip on the button for the seat control. I went to Home Depot to get a circlip but it was the wrong size.

Who carries such tiny parts? I could try AutoZone, etc., but I doubt they'll have it. If I call a dealership, I'm sure they'll find it and it'll be $17 for this simple 2 cent clip. I also hate to call a dealership for part numbers when I'm trying to NOT buy from them.

Thanks,

1991 300d

I would try a hardware store. Not a big box store like HD or Lowes, but an actual hardware store, like Ace. Might have to hit the yellow pages to find one.

Also try a speciality bolt place like Fastenal. They might have something that would work.

The part is likely metric.

Calling a dealer for part numbers is exceedingly bad form, they are busy enough with paying customers. If someone was wasting your time at your job, how long would you tolerate that?

As for a low cost part costing $ across the counter, There is a certain expense floor incurred to even deliver an empty plastic bag, add in the cost of sourcing the part, storing a slow moving part ( if it sells at all ) for 26 years and it is going to be more $ than if you bought a box from the manufacturer. You are likely the only person that has ever needed this part in the past 26 years.

Find this clip on the open market, buy 1,000, generate an E bay listing and see what happens.

FINALLY A Question calling for reference from THE STONE AGE ......

HEMMINGS MOTOR NEWS..... a Paper collection of ads from people , many of whom do not have a web site, who have specialized in automobile parts for decades before computers were invented....

Subscribe to the paper copy of the magazine.... get out your magnifying glasses because the ads are printed in tiny print.... and lock yourself into a room...

You are going to need a lot of time because not only is a paper magazine not searchable in the fashion we are now used to.... .but ALSO the advertisers may list some service which is not categorized in the pages at the back which tries to help you find what you are looking for...

Serious bargain hunters pay for the expedited shipping and make sure they are home when the mail man arrives...

LOL

Can you reference this clip by location of where it was or another like it? I have bins of switches.

Buy a used assembly from ebay, and take the needed clip from it.

I don't know why anyone thinks it's an imposition on Mercedes dealers to inquire about parts. Mercedes and their dealers have a strong interest in the maintenance of older vehicles, because the quality and durability of the brand is a major selling point for new and used vehicles. What other brand has a really large number of vehicles on the road that are 20 to 40 years old that still look very good and the owners can still trust on the road to drive almost anywhere. People like us can let them say that. We also support the market for used Mercedes.

When I need a part, I virtually always check with the dealer for cost. If the price seems reasonable, I buy from the dealer. If not, I tell them I'll check other places and come back if I can't find it for less. I cite the age of the car and the fact that my wife always complains about the amount I spend to keep it running. I've bought a lot of stuff from the dealer in the ten years I've owned my car, so I don't think they feel I'm unreasonable or cheap when I say I'll look elsewhere.

Checking with the dealer first sets a maximum price for the part. You can judge from that whether others are offering is reasonable. I live less than 10 minutes drive from the largest dealer in the Washington metropolitan area, so it's easy for me to go to talk to them.

Lots of the small stuff they sell is reasonably priced. It's the bigger things that cost too much -- example power steering pump.

The dealer probably will not have these clips in stock and will have to order them. Getting them takes a couple of days. That seems to be the new way for dealers to cut costs as they don't have to stock parts they may never sell or may sell only after stocking them for a couple of years.

Mcmaster is a bit high if you already know where to go for a bittenpiece, but if you don't they have it, and you will in a couple three days, tops. If you pick metric it'll show you all the DIN circlips, and its probably just a matter of matching the picture and shaft/groove OD and thickness.

Calling any vendor just to get part numbers so a purchase can be made elsewhere is bad form. Why should a busy vendor help out when there is zero chance they will get a sale? This is different that shopping around for best value and buying some parts from the dealer however.

Showing up in person gives face time with the parts guys and they will likely be more willing to help. It also helps if one has a clear vision of what you want and are willing to look through a parts printout to ID parts. Buy oil filters and such from the dealer even if it is a dollar or two more than a generic parts store, this way one can tie in " hey , can you please check this for me? "

Same. HBL in Tysons Corner is a solid dealership, best one in the area for sure. They have a vintage mercedes guy on staff as well, so they're well versed in our older cars. He was wrenching on a real 300SL gullwing last time i was there. The new metro station makes it pretty convenient.
