Yes, "made in china" or "made in Korea" seems like a great deal right up until it detonates and spews chunks all through your A/C system.

Actually, I have one in the 1984 300D now so I DO HAVE FIRST HAND EXPERIENCE. After reading your posts, I think I'm going to hand the A/C "made in China" compressor off to the metal recylers. Who needs the hassle of a failed compressor spewing chunks through the system?

My Klimakit bracket system to install the Sanden is fine on the SD.

How many old, domestic GM vehicles do you see on the road these days? I see pickups and Vettes only, the rest of the FWD stuff I see have windows down almost always. V-belt trucks are converted to Sandens all the time, most of the serp belts may still have it but rarely work until GM went away from the R4 in the mid to early '90s.

I had a newly made Compressor Works R4 on my SD before I went Klimakit, smooth and quiet but the stepped ports leaked. If you can figure those out, that is a route to consider. I have no idea how to make them seal, I even looked for a new manifold I could build lines from to no avail. I believe the compressor was manufactured here in Texas, well was at the time. I would purchase another CW unit if I needed one.

There is no way I would trust a Chinese reman compressor on my car, regardless of the compressor style.

Dunno, guys. I put an India made stop valve in the back of my injection pump and it only lasted 13 months. Very disappointed. Replaced with one from a junkyard Mercedes and am happy so far - three or so months.

I would almost say it is worth another $150 to get an American/German(?) made one. I am thinking go Chinese only in an extreme case.

Hey, you do what you need to do it's your car. You probably have a lot of other stuff made in China to be hauled off to the recycler: IPhone, flat screen TV, DVD player etc. I am sure you'll find more.

I'm on a mission to rid the world of "made in china" and "made in korea" J-U-N-K. That said, maybe Pep Boys "made in china" parts will work perfectly for your needs. Good luck, you'll need it.

Fun - Pep Boys just sent me an email $25 off a part of $100 or more. That may be your ticket for the AC compressor. If you do not get it, let me know and I will forward to you. Just send me your email address.

Can someone tell me how to put this guy on ignore list? I have not done that before so he'll be the first.

The kits Engatwork installed are not Klimakits afaik.
The R4 stepped ports need the correct color stepped washers to seal. That's what I have on my current compressor and they are sealing fine.

They are the brackets that Rollguy sells. I was not aware there was an option. I didn't mean to try to sound "mean", just sharing my experience.

Many of those US cars didn't last as long as their A/C systems. As a result, you could pick up used R4s for next to nothing at the wreckers. Maybe you still can.

On older domestics, they probably swapped the R4s for rebuilts when originals failed.

It was quite a while ago, but local shop installed a Trumark compressor in my 85 300D when original failed. (I seem to recall they may be associated with 4 Seasons?). Not sure if new or rebuilt. Anyway, it only lasted 1 season . The supplier replaced it with a rebuilt original MB compressor. It lasted for 3 years and seized. I cut belt and gave up on A/C. Plan was to pick up a GM R4 from wreckers, but never got to that. Windows & sunroof open when it's hot!
