1999 E300 EGR Delete

I want to delete the EGR on my 1999 E300 and I thought I had it figured out but that is not the case!
On my 1995 E300 I made a gasket without the center hole and that worked fine.On my 1999 I pulled off the vacuum hose and plugged the hose and all was well until the "check engine"light came on after 30 minutes of driving.
Is there a better way to delete the filthy EGR vale?
I am driving the car with the "check engine" light on and I am hoping I am not causing any damage in doing so.
