Bought Another SDL

Couldn't pass this one up. I think this makes Mercedes diesel #35 for me. Yes, I have a problem.

I would love to find some seats (front and rear) for the car. I have a complete interior from a later model w126 that I can install, but it would be nice to only replace the seats. Anybody got any dark brown seats that are in great shape?

The car had a crack in the flex pipe on the forward end of the exhaust manifold. It needs a reseal on the IP to stop an oil leak. It shifts out very well. It's going to need ball joints and possibly guide rod mounts.

$750 sounds pretty good. Are there problems that dictated that price?

I found some dark brown - tobacco brown - seats on an early 90s gasser that I bought to put in my 300SD some years back, but never got it running. Doesn't do you any good, I sold them a few years back, at any rate, those seats are out there, coming soon to a boneyard near you or far from you. The latter more likely.

I saw a 126 at a boneyard once with the front seats out sitting next to it and the leather removed. Given the weight of the seats and the likelihood that you would pay less for the leather only seems like a good way to go. I'm guessing it would be good to have some practice removing said leather ahead of time. I peeled off some of the leather from some BMW E30 front seats a while back so as to stitch them up from underneath. There are tricks to it.

I'll keep an eye out. The boneyards here in the Bay Area are a pretty prime resource from what I've read - I have it pretty good. There are 5 pick n pulls within 40 miles of me. The closest one also generally the best, maybe 5 miles away but they have the German/Euro section more than a quarter mile from the gate. I've made that walk many times. It's funny how large parts of the south bay have shoreline property that is the dregs - flat and stinky. There are a bunch of boneyards that are about the last thing on the road before you get to the water. The Newark yard, the best one, the very last stop on the road to the bay. I get a kick out of the view on Google Earth.

A month or so ago I found 5 primo 126 front seats, all in gray at 3 different yards. I want the tan, the light brown.

Typical Problems

I bought if from the second owner. He had owned it for the past 24 years. It has 240k on it. It still has a #14 head, but a complete head job was done on it around 180k. It has two bad glow plugs. The AC still cools, but the compressor shuts off when the engine drops back to idle. I'm thinking it may be a speed sensor/Klima relay issue.

The tires are new and the suspension in the rear is solid. I've always loved the w126 chassis in the SDL. I'll fix a few items and then sell the car later on. I just hated to see someone buy it and do hack jobs on it. This car will be a nice road car for someone who can appreciate it.

If I can't find some dark brown seats soon then I'll be installing the lighter color interior from the 1991 560 SEL I stripped on Monday.

I haven't seen the dark brown too often. In fact the only time I saw it, they were cherry on that late-model gasser I mentioned. Amazing stroke of luck considering that power seats were about 40 bucks each at Pick And Pull back then. In that shape would've easily been 100 each or more elsewhere.

Swapping Interior

I've already begun the process of swapping out the interior. I really like the condition of the later model interior. I'll have some nice dark brown door panels and such available for anyone who would be interested. Both the donor car and my car have the reclining rear seat. If someone is interested in converting theirs then I will have an extra assembly...I'm thinking.

Advice needed!

I am slowly swapping out the interior in my newly acquired SDL. It already had a reclining rear seat and the new interior comes with one as well. I haven't removed the B-pillars yet, and I may find my problem (broken wire), but the fuse for the left hand switch blows immediately when inserted into its space in the fuse block. There's no power to the right hand switch. In other words, my reclining rear seat is not working. I've never owned one of these with this "luxury" option so I'm not real sure when to begin my search for the problem. I have a complete setup from the donor car, but the original equipment may be fine if I can get power to it. Any advice would be appreciated. Also, I am terrible with automotive electrical work. Absolutely terrible!

Check out the under seat wiring harness powering the seat for worn insulation. It can come loose from the anchor clip, get caught up in the seat adjust hardware, and short the circuit. Mine did that.

Also check the door itself. I had one of the wires break in my left-side door (fortunately where I could get to it to fix it!). The result was that the seat would work when the left door was open and the right door closed, but not if the left door was closed or both doors were open. Took a lot of head scratching and probing to find that one...

Don't know what happened, but...

The rear seat started working 🤔. Only one side would function, but I found that the cable for that side had somehow malfunctioned. It's working like a charm now and no more blown fuses. I'm at a loss as to what happened. Now I need to find the arms for the sunroof. The interior swap is going very well.

Its a built in number in your head usually that tells if ones a keeper ,as you get better at accessing the car for cost to fix the reasoning for walking away is harder and for $750 the seller was ready to part with her .I see a lincoln commercial type picture needed for posting.
