Today John looked at it and pulled codes etc. He discovered there is a fuel related recall and suggested I get it checked to see if it has had the recall.

Do some research to determine whether the stock system is sufficient. It isn't on 2nd gens.

The stock fuel system on a 24V is under sized. FASS is the solution for that engine. FASS controls price. If it's appropriate for your truck, my friend in Nashville can price as good as any.

The pickup needs to be at the bottom of the tank or you can't run fuel level down past 1/4 tank.

The FSM may be available. I have the 99 & 01 which won't help. I think some are stickied on cumminsforum.

I'm on my phone and can't edit.

The fuel recall may be to move the fuel pump from the engine to the tank. If so, DO NOT do it. Problems won't be fixed and pump will be more difficult to access.

If that is the case, definitely do a FASS.

Junkman, I don't know if the '08 has the same fuel system we have but if so I, of course, agree with you. Fass, as in Bad FA$$!

Does the '08 still have the ISB? I mean, I know it's a Cummins but I know that the current truck uses a different Cummins and I don't know when that happened (I was retired by then).

FASS is one of the common and well thought of fuel systems.

FSM = factory service manual.

What he said. Fass is an aftermarket company that makes fuel system components for Dodge/Cummins vehicles. I know they have other stuff but for me the main thing of merit they offer is the high output fuel lift pump. It kicks booty and keeps doing it - mine's about 3 years old now and has lots of miles on it w/o a single hiccup. The Bosch lift pump is woefully inadequate. But I'm not sure if your engine has the same system - Fass will know.

I don't know what engine you have. It looks like there were 2 available. Dodge Cummins Diesel Forum

The dealer can access your build sheet so you know exactly what came stock on your truck. You'll need the VIN - probably the last 8 digits.

The 1st step with earlier Cummins is to get whatever weak systems there are up to snuff. Next, build as you want. You said that it has enough power so you're just trying to make it reliable.

Some generations had problems with fuel pump & lines, others had injectors going out. The msot common issues should be covered in the 1st few pages of the forums. You'll like the truck once anything weak is sorted out.

It's sad that Dodge didn't build a better truck around the beautiful engine.

It's a 6.7.

I have no disappointments with the Dodge truck surrounding the engine. The AC was always weak on my 03 and kept requiring repair but the new 08 has a system that will run you out! Sometimes it won't go low enough.

Interesting thing on the AC. From the time I got Truck the AC was always minimal. Knowing I was coming to Jax for an extended time I took Truck into my buddy's shop for an AC check. The tech found that if he installed the required quantity of coolant the pressures went way too high and if he lowered the pressure the outlet temp was too warm. Luckily, he knew the issue - a restriction in the system. So he purged it for a while w/filtered compressed air then vacuumed the system as usual and did a refill. All the pressures and temps came out OK.

Now I'm driving around in 97*/100% (almost) Florida humidity and have to turn the AC controls warmer to be comfy! I don't know how common this issue is but might be pretty common. We were hoping not to have to pull the expansion valve (most likely location of a plug) as it's under the dash and is a stinker to get to. The purge did the number.

Something to put in the memory bank.

Tom, I agree. I'm FINE with the Dodge part of Truck. The only bad thing was the formulation of the plastic in the dash - I need a new dash top and will do that as soon as the bank account recovers. He IS a Florida truck but there's zero rust and few rattles, caused by add-on side bumper steps (I need to give 'em a quick zip of weld). The interior looks great, the power stuff works, and after the lift pump was resolved the whole deal is bullet-proof.
