I drive an om606 and the thing is pretty fast for a diesel. It keeps up with all modern cars, no problem uphill and it hauls *** if I need it to. If I'm cruising at 40 and I floor it, all the torque is right there to move it to 100 like it's nothing while smoothly doing it.

I've owned an om603 300d and it drove fine with traffic, no power problems with the a.c. cranked.

Thumbs up

I cruise at or below 70mph on the freeways here, unless signage points to lower limits...some are higher, but the 617 seems to really do well around 67-70mph. SDL will run much faster, just noisy to me. It could use a 2.47:1 diff, 617 seems right on with the 2.88:1

The turbo doesn't really build any useful boost until you hit ~2K. When driving off-boost, the OM603 has about the same amount of torque as a wet newspaper.

If you're in traffic <45MPH, leave the gear selector in "3". It'll still drive like an automatic, but it won't go into 4th. You won't see any difference in fuel consumption, but it does make it a lot easier to lane change or get in front of the bluehair doing 10 in her Buick.

The other "magic secret" seems to be to use ~3/4 throttle during acceleration and LEAVE IT THERE until you reach your target speed. If you mash the pedal to the floor, it won't do as well.

One exception - Panic acceleration. Push HARD to the floor to trigger the kickdown switch and hold it until you hit ~4500 RPM then back off to 3/4 throttle. Listen to that turbo sing... You WILL scoot along!

Driving as I do a lot in surface street traffic in my 240D manual transmission my driving style is pretty much dictated by the realities of Phoenix traffic. I floor the acelerator from 1'st up to 4'th until I reach about 45 mph when I ease off and can drive "normally". Anything else risks being rear ended. In particular if you are moving off from a stop light etc. It's a bit nerve wracking seeing people in the rear view having to slam on brakes as they realize that while all the signs and signals would indicate the Benz in front of them is accelerating they appear to be about to ram it up it's ass.

Once I'm up to freeway speeds about 60 to 65 it does very well but I try not to go above 65 if possible, even though it seems to want to get on up above 70. I just don't think it's prudent given the state of the motor.

I must say I have a hard time believing Squiggles account of 80mph in a 110 200D. Must have been a rare jewel of a car to have managed that.

- Peter.

I have found this to be so true in all of my diesel MBs. If you mash it, it doesn't have as much power. 3/4 throttle it feels more powerful. You really have to know how to drive these cars to get the use of the torque.

I haven't come to a conclusion why this is true about our cars however.

The last part is interesting. I just thought my engine was just seriously worn or something was very wrong when I put the pedal to the metal and it didn't go as fast as I thought.

Would of never thought of this.

@ Squiggle, you need a truck.

To answer the question, the SD will go faster than it should on the hwy. My 15 yr old son who is more important than a car is getting what was his Grand Dad's 85SD because it's big, safe & sloooow.

One of his peers has a corvet that was his grand dad's. That wouldn't happen in my house. He won't even get the 78 Datsun Z. That's mine.

I had a series of 240 and 300D 123s that my kids drove while still in my household. Slow sturdy and great handling and brakes. Great crash protection too. two of my kids got rearended in them with minor injuries.

It depends on where I am, where I'm going, and whether I'm in a hurry. It sees WOR and shifting at the dots a lot, but at times, when I'm not in a hurry, I'll go as slow as five over. I actually run it less hard now with the open exhaust, since it makes such a good (Cummins-like) noise at half pedal and short shifting.

if im running less than 50" HG boost there probably a police officer behind me lol. usually i keep pace with the cars in front of me but if theres a break i tend to average 10 over. it also depends on where im going on the highway im usually driving long distance so i tend to have a lead foot to shorten the trip time. in town and on errands im a bit slower. have yet to get pulled over for anything (knock on wood) driving related. well see what happens once my 8mm pump and new injectors arrive.

I once had my W126 just over 100mph on a long downgrade, split highway. Cop in other direction finally caught up with me, didn't clock me but gave me ticket anyway. This was during Reagan years with a 55mph speed limit. Gave me ticket for 75mph. How could I claim he was dead wrong?

On my W201 I've had it to 85mph on a long downhill but on highways 73mph seems comfortable. R's are at 4K rpm.

My old 220 Diesel gets rather noisy at 70, so I typically drive around 60 miles an hour on the interstate. Helps the fuel economy too, keeps it around 30-33.

All I can say about the 200D featured on Page 1 of the thread going 75 all day is it must've had quite the radiator, especially when hills were encountered on summer afternoons.

I've got kind of a lead foot in general, and my 300D 2.5 seems to scoot okay when asked. I mean, it's not great off the line, but I remember being pleasantly surprised at it's ability to keep up (and even overtake) regular traffic on the interstate.

I live and work on islands with no roads larger than 2-lane, so in general my absolute max speed in the best of circumstances is about 60mph. I'm also not afraid to keep the revs high, often keeping the shifter in 3rd when I want to have fun on some back roads, and even dropping down to 2nd for cornering.

It's no sports car, and my much newer BMW coupe with inline-6 feels like a rocket ship by comparison - but this old turbodiesel feels toque-ier than the specs would suggest, when the revs are high enough.
