Lightbulb Possible ASD removal

I own a 1991 350SD that came equipped with ASD. Can this equipment be removed? I don't think this even works anymore.

Thanks,
Sausage King

Boudin Man:

If the ASD does not work, then, from an operational standpoint, it has been removed.

The usual phrase is: "If it ain't broke, don't fix it."
In this case, since "It is broke, so there's no need to remove it."

Are you, too, having trouble finding a rebuilt tandem power steering pump or seal kit? I'm going through this with a 1991 350SDL.

I asked about disabling that on my '95 E300, my favorite Indy mechanic said "not possible". Same guy is willing to replace a KLIMA with aftermarket relay to make AC work, so he knows how to hack when it makes sense.

What is the real problem that you're trying to fix? A used tandem pump from a 4-matic 124 or any 124 wagon should fit just fine.

Simply removing the ASD hoses from the pump and plugging the bores probably won't work as the pump would most likely grind up from lack of lubrication on the ASD portion. But, if one wants to replace the tandem pump with the regular type, I think it would work.

The ASD in my roommate's 1991 W126 350SDL might be acting up because the triangle light on the dash keeps lighting, the hose that goes back to the differential keeps moving away from the oil pan and then slamming up against it, and the ASD module or whatever by the differential keeps going HISS...HISS...HISS...

Also, the power steering pump is failing and it's extremely hard to turn the steering wheel at low speeds.

To add insult to injury, rebuild kits for the tandem pumps (0004608080) are no longer available. They show up on almost every parts site until you actually order one, and then your money is immediately refunded with an apology email about all brands being backordered with no ETA.

Rebuilt tandem pumps are about $1,000.

So, removing ASD and going to a common power steering pump may indeed be the way to go if possible!
