300SD water pump to housing bolts

Hi.....

My pump was leaking and all the spraying in the world did not loosen 2 of the 5 10mm bolts that hold pump to its housing, they sheared right off..... all was peachy until i got there, even with bolts off that pump is frozen to that housing, is there something else besides those 5 tiny bolts that hold it on.... does not appear to be and pump itself has no threads so seems it should be coming off, but its frozen solid to housing .... Im guessing that pump has been there a veryyyyyy long time, Ive had this one 5 years

only vehicle, only resident inside Nat Forest, closest part or hardware is 40 miles....not happy moment

Can anyone tell me the size of those bolts.... I have searched for them and a size but have found nothing..... I got housing loose but Im not so sure I want to try and drill them out, with a hand drill.... I may try though but if I buy new housing (not cheap) I still need more bolts either way and must order thru mail. But then pump is still stuck to housing lol

If I have to I will put it back together as it is and keep refilling water to find parts but that is kind of stupid.... life in paradise has its moments

Thanks for any help.... tim

You at least have some that you got out to compare the threads with.

(if this is an SD with a 617.952.) There is another housing between the Water Pump and the Block. Unfortunately the Blots can also break off if you try to remove that.

If the pump is rusted/corroded in really wall there may not be a way to get it out without some damage.

You can get an old butcher or chief's knife and but the edge between the Pump flange and the other part and gently try to tap it in to separate the pump. If it separates a little and spray in penetrating Oil.

Do the same around as much of the Pump as you can. If you can get it to start moving it will eventully get to the point where you can gently use some screwdrivers to pry with.

I posted the pic so you can get some idea of how far forward you need to go.

Hi.......

I already have the piece between the pump and block removed, that came off easily and I have the new water pump too.... I actually waited until I got that off to try and remove the stuck bolts so i was not at an angle to strip them but no help.

I dont care of i destroy the old water pump, I just need it off , ill try that tomorrow beating it with a hammer did not work loosening it up

Someone said in another thread Lowes had that size bolt but that is like 75 miles away....Tomorrow Ill see if by luck my not running Range Rover has a few of that size somewhere on it

Hopefully someone will come along that knows that bolt size....

Someone here made/makes a jig out of an old pump so that you can use it to drill the old bolts to remove them.

If you have the other housing off you ought to be able to heat it from the inside face with a propane torch. Heat allows penatrating oil to penatrate even more.
Any of the Bolts associated with the Cooling System can be siezed. It is a frequent problem.

One of the Water Pump bolts on mine was broken off by a previous owner. I did not bother to fix that for only one. I used sealant on both of the Gasket faces when I insalled the Pump.

I have had frequent experience drilling out broken off Bolts because I worked at a Naval Ship yard. Lots of corroded steel bolts on stuff.

In general the smaller the bolts get the chances of drilling and removing them decreases.

Small ezout type bolt extraction tools also easily break.

If a helicoil is used and the treads are exosed to the Coolant inside you need to be sure you use some sort of sealant or the Coolant is going to seep between the helicoil and block threads.
