W124 electrical/mechanical question

Is the speedometer have anything electrical at all on It? Or is it 100 mechanical and works off only the cable? I recall an RPM inductive sensor seeing something about that somewhere but not sure if it coeherses with the Speedo. I put in a cable and still don't have a working Speedo. The tab it clicks into is ok and not broken on the trans.

It can be tricky getting your hand up behind the module to make sure it's fully home.

Check if the square end rotates then go from there.

Don't think there's any electrical stuff in there, could be wrong but pretty sure these things work mechanically, again you can check using a power drill (on other end).

The indication portion of the speedometer is purely mechanical. However there is a Hall effect pickup on the back of the case, that creates a vehicle speed signal. This is fed to the X53/5 block behind the cluster, which distributes the signal to the climate control, cruise control, temperature indicator, and later model stereos.

I would find a small screwdriver bit that fits into the cable socket and carefully spin it up with a drill.

It is entirely possible the cable has snapped within the sheath which would give you no indication.

I believe Jay when I swapped the engine, i remember taking it out and I think I stepped on it. I wonder if they're that fragile. A Gemo is $9 aftermarket. I may get it and see what happens.

The speedo cables are not so fragile that you can easily break them, but they can be easily kinked so that the speedo needle jumps around.

Remove the centre of the old speedo cable , and pop it in to a drill.Put the other end in to the speedo Switch it on and you will see if its the speedo head is faulty or not. Or do it with the new cable to check that out also.
