Repairing vinyl on dash
 

My 77 240d has developed a crack in the vinyl near the ignition key. It is about one inch from the metal tumbler.

In the past with other cars, those vinyl repair companies need a large flat surface in order to repair vinyl. They said that is needed to have room to get their iron in there.

Does anyone know a way to fix this before it becomes a big problem?

I too have a wear spot at the ignition...
You can just slather in some of the vinyl repair goop and use a piece of vinyl covered in vasaline to press in a pattern.
Sounds good anyway....

Permatex makes a vinyl and leather repair kit with a heat wand (end is about the size of a quarter and plugs into 110 V), various colors, glue, color mixing chart to match, and textured patches to match the texture of the item being repaired. I've used it on my dash and leather seats - works well. Read the instructions and experiment a bit before using it. Found the kit at Pep Boys.

I have a worn area in the same place. I want to eventually purchase a vinyl repair kit - as above. To keep the damage confined for now, I covered it with a piece of vinyl electrical tape. It doesn't look as bad as one would think (even on blue vinyl), and it has stopped the damage. Until I saw the thread, I had almost forgot about that future improvement project.
