240D rebuilt Longblock
1 Attachment(s)
Hello,
I bought a 240D, and the owner claimed it had a "crate" motor. I have attached a picture of the label on the valve cover. I just barely brought it home. I wanted the group to help me understand this label. Could this possibly be a Mercedes long block? a factory or dealer rebuilt? |
A factory rebuilt job should have a metal tag somewhere on the rear of the block I think?
|
It is very probable. Phone a dealer and ask then to look up the part number. I think it will come back as a long block unit. You might want to ask if it includes the injection pump. I also thought that they ground the original serial number off.
Not positive but if it is not where it should be it to me is also pretty conclusive. No way I am absolutely positive but just what I suspect. |
That is the part number for a "Basismotor", which I think translates to a long block. About $3500 plus $1800 core.
|
Is there a "short block" motor? I was under the impression that a 2.4 was a 2.4, same basic motor in the old and newer models?
|
I saw one of those with a Metric Motors tag in a 240D in the wrecking yard. It looked like a brand new engine, but I think the valve cover had a hole in it and the camshaft was broken. Such a shame. It still may have been a good engine if the valves and camshaft were replaced.
Mark82--short block means something like just the block without the head, while a long block would be a complete engine and possibly with injection pump. |
