Shopping list for OM617.952 timing chain replacement

Hello all,

I bought a 1982 300SD that probably needs one of these (I am expecting to do it in a couple weeks).

I want to make sure I replace all the parts that may need it as I do this.

I have:

- an OEM IWIS timing chain
- a Mercedes timing chain riveter tool set

I figure I need

- all the chain rails (How many? I have heard two-three-four???)
- a new hydraulic chain tensioner
- a new valve cover gasket

What else? What about timing gears, especially the upper ones?

Help me out, please, I want to do this right.

The car has between 240-280,000 miles.

Have to redo the odometer too, lol.

It's probably best to pull the valve cover and find out what you're up against. Unless the chain is really bad you probably don't need replacement sprockets. Does the chain even need replacement? What's the timing stretch?

If you don't have it, you will need a tool to pull the guide rail pins. The crank pulleys will need to come off to get to the lower pins. You might as well replace the front seal and spacer ring while you are there. One of the pins is under the vac pump (I think), so a vac pump gasket will be needed. You may or may not get away with replacing the chain guides without the IP getting out of time, so be prepared to re-time it. If you plan to change the lower/outer most guide, the IP timer needs to be removed. You will definitely need to re-time the pump if you go that far.......Rich
