79 300cd

Hi,

I am back in the diesel business again. I have a 79 300CD that I picked up with broken timing chain. It basically needs a rebuild as the valves are bent and I suspect piston damage. It a non-turbo diesel and I was wondering what would have to be changed to put in a turbo diesel.

Is their major top speed difference between turbo and non-turbo?

Thanks,

Morph:p

Exclamation to turbo or not to turbo?

Morphous,
Great Idea however, the turbo 617 motor has many differences that are not visually seen. The pistons have oil channels to help cool them better, they are a harder metal piston than the non turbo type. The injectors are set up to deliver more fuel for the turbo, exaust manifold is different. From my research, the best way to change from non turbo to turbo would be to buy, rebuild, a turbo motor to swap out. It would be too difficult to set up the non turbo engine to accept the turbo. I hope I didn't "let the air" out of your plans. CD in SC

Engine Swapping

All,

Sorry. What I meant to say is how hard would it be to swap out a non-turbo vs turbo motor. I am not trying to rebuild a non-turbo into turbo as this is not possible.

I am wondering what significant changes are need to put a turbo motor in this non-turbo car.

Thanks,

Morph

Thumbs up 617 turbo

This should be pretty strait forward. Sorry I don't want to tell you something that I have no experience with, I would think that swapping would not be much of a difference. The exaust in the parts book show all different parts from the manifold back. Let us know what you decide. goodluck CD in SC:p

In addition, I believe the final drive ratio is different... but that is not critical. Down the road, if you wish to have lower revs on the highway and better economy, considering swapping the diff.

Besides the higher ratio final drive makes a snappier car off the line + the addition of the turbo.

(higher? or is it lower?...:p)

If you attempt, keep us informed of whats involved as my eye is always out for a CD and one with a bad motor would be great if priced right and I would likely be attempting the same thing.

IMO, if you can find a wrecked one with the motor you want to tow home, the switch with all necessary components would be a relative piece of cake.

Good luck.

Exhaust system is different, but the correct system should bolt up.

Different rear-end gear ratio, and I think the gear ratios in the transmission are different too, even though it will bolt up fine. May not be enough of an RPM difference to be a problem, but I'm not sure.

Maybe you should post this in the Tech Help forum, so maybe
Benzmac or one of our other respected gurus might see it and be able to be more specific.

Mike
