722.317 K2 Drum Rebuild

I am in process of rebuilding my 722.317 Automatic transmission in my 1987 Mercedes 300D, 124 Chassis.

The transmission has around 325,000. The speed-o-meter has been repaired multiple times, so mileage may vary. Also, I am not the original owner, but rather have had the car for 6 years. It is my daily driver.

I wanted to share what I have learned.

Today I rebuilt the K2 Clutch Drum.

722.317 transmission K2 drum

hi I have a question . I got the reseal kit but I can not find the k2 drum seal. is this seal a separate part I need to order and if so . can you give me the part number and purchase company. also I notice a cut out in the old seal ? is this normal or a piece of the seal missing? I appreciate your feed back. best regards.

Intercool, the "cutout" you are seeing in my photo of the K2 oring is where it has shrunk and split. This is why both K1 and K2 orings have to be replaced. I bought a TRANSTAR Kit #68006B that included a SMS Gasket Kit #0507223, note the last numbers 7223, designation for the 722.3 Mercedes transmission. The kit came with both K1 and K2 orings and bolts to replace the rivets along with the paper copy of the instructions.

You could measure the diameter of the groove and the old oring cross-sectional diameter and source your own orings, making sure whatever material you bought is compatible with ATF.

The attachment of ATSG (Automatic Transmission Service Group) / Trans Tec Insert #9468 includes instructions on how to remove the rivets, what drill bits to use for K1 and K2 drums and what fasteners to use to replace the rivets.

It does not mention the part number or size of the orings.

Here are some online pictures I found of the same gasket kit. You can just make out the screws in the picture and the last picture has the same instructions as my kit.

This guy says the hidden orings for K1 and K2 are (size dash-153: 3 1/2 inches inside diameter by 3/32 inches thick):

1989 190E 2.6 B3 Replacement Question

I have not verified this....

Thanks for your awesome response . You have just solved all my questions. I can breathe easy now . Wish I had ask this question before I got the Mercedes reseal kit of which don’t come with the screws and drum seals. Had to order a new kit from Fatsco that comes with everything like you say . Transtar is great, I got the torque converter from them . So happy with all the info . It makes you want to work lol. This is just a project car and gaining some experience with my first trans overhaul. Thanks again. Best regards. Sonny .
