220 Diesel died, no restart?

So my 1971 220 Diesel has quit. Looking for a starting point to get it back up and going. Engine still cranks. spins free as before. Right before it died there was a big black cloud and then it quit. I need to do a compression test but it never felt like it was getting weak or lacking power in a certain cylinder. just driving home and dead.

Thanks for any advise/help

Have you already dropped the oil to check for anything that may be in it?

Don't forget to grease the screw and threads on the spring compressor.

If you have good compression and good glow plugs it would logically be lack of fuel. It will run fine on wd 40 if the other systems are good. If it turns out to be lack of fuel you'll need to figure out why.

Or possibly too much? Could the governor diaphragm (it's the old pneumatic IP) have ruptured suddenly? When the diaphragm leaks the IP will over deliver. To the point of belching out a big cloud of black and stopping the engine? Dunno . . .

I do know that it's pretty easy to check the governor diaphragm, though.

How would I do that? If I bypass the IP it won't have enough pressure right?

Just remove the filter and spray right into the intake. If it has compression and air but no fuel it will run fine on the wd 40 as long as you keep spraying. Just don't try to drive it that way.

Sounds like a fuel problem to me. Have you checked the easy stuff yet, such as fuel lines and filters? Could a hose have gotten kinked?
