I'm looking at a mid to late 70's 300D
turbo. I'm wondering what the fuel consumption for this model is for mostly in town driving when in good tune ? The salesman says it's hard starting, needs extra battery boost, smokes and is rough running, suspension works and one PW doesn't work. The rockers are rusted out and it has a set of mismatched lousy tires. Offered it for 2K CDN$ all in but think it could be acquired for half that. I know a little about diesels from working around HD equipment, but you more experienced know what to look for specifically for this model. Are these cars very economical to run fuel usage wise if they don't need anything major ? Thanks in advance for any inputs - R.V.

Economical

To answer your root question; Yes they are economical to run. However your desription is giving me a Vi$ual. I highly suggest that someone who is familiar with that model go take a look with you so that you have an understanding of how far you may need to open your wallet after purchace.

'70s 300D

Well I would say that 2K CDN is way too much.
I sold my '79 300D for under 1K US and it had a new battery, started easily, had almost no rust and got 2K miles per quart of oil (had a little leak that never was fixed).

My fuel consumption in this non-turbo diesel was 22-23 around town and 23-24 on the highway.

I would look at getting something is better shape (not much rust and starts easily) for your 2K CDN.

Hope that this helps.

I have two concerns about that statement. First, a mid 70s would be a W115 chassis, while a late 70s would be a W123 chassis. The differences are significant.

Second, the 300D didn't come with a turbo in the 70s. If someone added a turbo to a normally aspirated engine, then that might be cause for concern. Or they might have swapped in a later engine, which is not a bad thing, but you would want to know it.

At any rate, $2000C is too much money for a rusty car.

Thanks for the input ! It's an 80 300SD and advertised as having 200000KM and running good but needing work. The dealer is also offering a warranty, but am sceptic on this item. I'm seeing more of these models around the same year offered privately from 1K to 1.5K possibly in better condition or sounding better. I'm also considering a VW but would like to know MPG of these models or a 240D which is also available in this price range. I've only seen in other forums a 40 MPG (U.S. ?) figure for a 4 cyl model unspecified for city or hwy. I'll a pretty good grinder and I'll be trying to get the best deal for the best price, being currently unemployed is also a factor for getting the best deal. Thanks again !

My only advice is to stay away from cars with the dreaded A/C Servo, or you will have some expensive repairs when it goes... Oh, and make sure things are in fairly decent shape, or you will spend $everal thousand getting things back into shape. Probally a nice 240D will fit your bill if you are looking to get in the upper 20mpg-low 30mpg range...

Thanks guys ! and whats an A/C servo, where is it and how to identify it and if it's working, I'm more familiar with N/A cars A/C so this is a concern though A/C is nice for the summer but not essential where I am and hope failure of this item won't effect other systems resulting in being stuck on the road somewhere.

The A/C Servo is a black box mounted in the front of the engine compartment with a lot of vavuum lines connected to it, and a few heater hoses. It controls the coolant flow for the heater/defroster. A lot of times they develop bad cracks and leaks, or the internal valves and flaps sieze up. They run anywhere from $600-$900, plus about $100 for a new climate control amp...
