Problems in Alabama
I have just bought a 1999 E300, I made the mistake of buying on ebay site unseen and trusted the previous owner as to the condition of the car. I got the car home and it will crank and run, but if you start driving it it will run about 5 miles cut off and not restart, if you let it sit till the engine has completely cooled off it will restart and do the same thing again. I replace the fuel shutoff valve and the K40 relay, after reading some of the posts on this forum, I have new fuel hoses ordered and should be here next week, at that time I plan on pulling the intake to replace hoses. My question is has anyone else has a similar problem? I have a check engine light on but will have to get a obd2 scanner to see what that is. also when the car runs just a minute the "oil at minimum level" messages comes on across the dash, yet when you check the oil it seems to be just a little over full, any ideas? any help would be greatly appreciated. the car is clean and a real good looking vehicle, if olny I could get it to run as good as it looks.

On my gasser ‘99, this was the symptom of a bad crank position sensor. May be the same for Diesel.

Does a diesel have a crank position sensor?

Yes they do. In the earlier cars it was only for controlling the EGR system. In the W210 it is used to control the injection pump. They are drive-by-wire vehicles. There have been a few threads on this forum of W210 diesels dying while driving and being solved with a new CPS.

Yes do get an OBD scanner to see why the CEL is on. The cheapo $20 ones will give generic OBD2 codes from engine only. The better ones like Autel MD802 will give the more detailed Mercedes specific codes, as well as being able to scan/clear codes from transmission, airbags, and all the other onboard computers.
"Oil at minimum" warning when the dipstick shows full is usually a failed oil level sender. It's an inexpensive fix. This is the part you want: Pelican Parts - European Automotive Parts and Accessories - Porsche • BMW • Mercedes • Volkswagen • Audi • Saab • Volvo • MINI It bolts to the side of the oil pan, very quick and easy to replace. Do not buy the "uro" brand.

Does anyone know the part number on the CPS? I'm place a older with pelican on the low oil sensor, thought I'd kill 2 birds with one stone. ****UPDATE***** I found it and got it ordered, now if anyone could give me an idea of just where it is on the motor?

I had a BMW that acted that way. Sometimes it would shut down when it was hot and cooling it off always made it run like a top. I chased that gremlin for several years until a Bimmer mechanic gave me a clue.
Crank sensor.

On the gas cars, it was on the bell housing, about 10 o'clock looking from the rear. If I recall correctly, you needed a male torx socket to remove it.

IIRC it's on the far end of the block where the transmission attaches, just above the starter.

Thank you for all the help, I'll post results as soon as parts get here. I'm truly hoping that the crank sensor will fix it, because I'll be at the end of my rope if it doesn't and then it will go to the dealer. one way or another I'm gonna get this thing into shape.

UPDATE: In addition to the items I mentioned in my primary post, I have replaced all the clear fuel lines (No Bubbles at all now) I went ahead and replaced the crank sensor. Pulled the intake and cleaned the black gunk out of it. finished up about 2 1/2 hours ago, washed my hands and went for a ride, made 40 miles and the car quit again, it thru a P0200 code, now here is the funny thing, i bought a scanner and when I tried to erase the code it wouldn't erase as long as the car wouldn't restart, after about 5 minutes the car cranked back up and then I could erase the code (if that makes sense), I did buy a can of contact cleaner and cleaned all the contacts to the ECM and k40 relays, any ideas?

You should leave Alabama, your problems in Alabama will then be over

I feel confident that the elephants will come back and be ranked #1 after the conference championship games. Auburn may fix the problem when UGA visits.
Anyway, Nick is throwing the disrespect card as I type.

Simple, Easy...
Startron in the Fuel tank,
Fungus/Algae/"Whatever" GONE! (I neglected to see if you'd changed both Fuel Filters...) Anyway...The advantage of Startron is it's enzymatic action that allows the Dead Algae/Fungus Corpus to pass harmlessly through the Filters [AND not clog them up].
