Any idea where this rubber grommet/sleeve/boot is supposed to go?

I have a 1982 240d. I found this on my driveway but I looked along the firewall and couldn't see anything missing. I'm really not sure how this could even fall off.

There are 3 holes in the rubber which look like they would hold the hard plastic vacuum lines.

Please look at pictures.

Thx

pete

Yes, perhaps under the spare tire? At least, my w115 has something like that at the bottom of the spare tire wheel well.

That isn't the same shape as the trunk drains on my W123. Those are straight down. The rubber that the OP is showing is angled pretty hard. I'm thinking it's for vac lines.

Has the car been in a collision in the rear?

That looks like one of the bulkhead covers from behind the rear seat... could be from the trunk...

The car hasn't been in a collision.
There's 3 holes inside possible for vacuum lines.

It's dark outside now but I will check the trunk tomorrow.

I've added some better photos.

Thanks for all the replies.

There is one of those on each side as some sort of a chassis or body drain. My recollection is that it is under the front door area and set in about 3-4” from the rocker.

It's a rocker drain plug, as Disco said.

If it fell off, it might be getting worn. There is a p/n on it, order two and when you receive them, apply Aerospace 303 generously before reinstalling under front door on the rocker panel. You can see the silhouette here.

Make sure the drain hole faces backwards.

I removed mine recently and soaked them in Silicone spray. After a few minutes I used a nylon brush and then my hands to remove the scale that builds up on the rubber and makes it stiff. I then washed them in a strong solution of dawn and hot water. Then before reinstalling I sprayed them again with silicon spray. Mine were 30 year old originals. It takes some time and elbow grease, but the original MB rubber is very strong and can be brought back to usable quality as long as it hasn't cracked.
