OM603 With Pushrods!

😂😂 I know, I know. The OM603 doesn’t have pushrods, but during the cylinder head removal on an ‘87 SDL I found something interesting. I’ll even call it creative. Upon removing what was supposed to be the upper pin for the chain guide rail I found that someone had used an old pushrod as a replacement for it. I actually removed the pin with just my fingers. No tools necessary 😂😂😳😳. Today I am reinstalling the cylinder head and will use the correct pin for the job. It never ceases to amaze me at what “fixes” have been done to some of these engines.

I can't imagine that motor was going to hold together like that a lot longer. Pretty funny in all honesty.

It's just a shame people are such hacks. I can never understand not putting it back together the way it came. Or trying to re-engineer something quote-on-quote better than what the factory engineers did.

Hack is too nice of a term sometimes...

I wouldn’t doubt that the previous owner paid good money for that “repair.” 🙄 He had owned the car for 24 years. The head was redone and the head gasket was replaced around 20 years ago according to what he told me.

A pushrod held the chain guide rail for 20 years? Huh good to know.

Yes, that’s one way to look at it. Glass half full. 😁

Hey, if it held up for 20 years it wasn't a bad repair, only a questionable one. Still a hack tho...
