1984 300D Mirror Switch Repair
I hope this makes me a hero to someone. I took the console mirror switch apart to fix "stem won't move" issue. That happens from coffee and sugary soda (especially if your kid doesn't soak up spills right away). I couldn't find any photos on the web to show how the innards go back together, though there was one photo of a later one (W124?). It is fairly easy to open. Carefully slip a small screwdriver between the black and yellow plastic from the rear, next to a locking finger. With another screwdriver, insert in the gap on the side (by the metal) and pry. Repeat at each locking finger. I got good at this after ~10 repeats. The black plastic seemed tough and showed no signs of cracking. I found hard brown stuff stuck on the stem ball.
When you open, the 3 copper dumb-bells will fall out and probably also the plastic stem. Don't fret. Take a photo right away since it will still capture the required orientation (springs under dumbbells should still be there). If yours looks different than my photo, please post. I failed to do so (too jiggy, will I ever learn?). This is the final orientation which made the switch work for me. But, I did take 2 photos and am going by the date to infer the last one (other has empty slot at top). The yellow base fits into the black housing only one way (one tab wider). The white square has 2 orientations (90 deg apart). I didn't notice, so just pulled it out for cleaning, then "oops". Note that the left and right dumbbells are offset vertically. The other important note is that 1 dumbbell cavity is empty. Without documentation, you have 8 possibilities. Probably took me more trials before I started approaching it methodically. I did prove that in no orientation will it short-circuit to blow the fuse. The mirror would move in 1 or 2 directions in some orientations. The photo is the one that moved it all 4 directions. Note I coat everything w/ di-electric silicone grease (also connector cavities). BTW, I also disassembled the window switches, since only one window was working (same spilled stuff). Not my first time in there and cleaning them got all windows working. No photos needed since no confusion in assembly. The "tilt levers" sit like a "U", with the ball on top-side acting against the spring. Dabs of silicone grease hold everything in place and are good to stop corrosion. The levers and balls cleaned up nice w/ ethanol. I rubbed the lower contacts w/ flat screwdriver and blew out everything. The plastic toggles fit only one way if you note where the LED shines. Update.
I thought I should have tried adding PeachParts in my google search terms. With that, I found this useful post by Jeremy in 2007: Cleaning the righthand mirror switch DIY He would have been my hero, by saving at least 30 min of fooling with different orientations. His photo, which he was smart enough to take "as found", shows the same as my final orientation which worked. The correct orientation can be described as "empty cavity opposite wide slot" and "skewed cavities 90 deg from wide slot. Yak added that the white square carrier has a key that allows it to go in smoothly only 2 ways 180 deg apart (either would work). I didn't notice such key and don't see it in Jeremy's photo. Yak also said it is easy to infer which cavities should have dumbbells by viewing the copper traces on the yellow base, but I stared long at the traces and couldn't tell, nor see any wear tracks in the copper. Trial and error worked for me. Everyone file these away for when needed. You can buy a new switch for $30, but must await delivery, "not avail" issues, and repeat every time somebody spills a drink on the console. Learning to clean it is more expedient.
