Can't get my fan back on. Help!

So I'm trying to get the fan back on to the 240D after the valve adjustment. I cannot get any of the four bolts started in any of the holes. Has anybody had this problem before? Really don't want to have to drill and tap into the fan pulley. The threads on the bolts appear to be ok. No idea what's going on.

- Peter.

Do the holes in the pulley line up with the right holes in the water pump flange?

That was it. Thanks. Like an idiot I had tried starting the motor without the fan on just to see if I'd got it all back together right and it would run. Turns out it starts fine with the new glow plugs. So that's great. However with the bolts out of the pulley it the flange and pump holes had misaligned. So the pulley fell off and the alternator belt as well. I've got the fan back on and now I'm trying to get the alternator belt back on. I hope I can figure that out before nightfall.

Done

Well it's done. Fortunately I was able to get the alternator loosened and then tightened with the help of various online resources. Happily I had the car up on ramps which made getting to the bottom bolt on the alternator simple. All assembled and working fine now.
