W116 Tranny question

I'm used to the 300SDL and the Bowden cable...I dont have it anymore but I have a W116 and it has an actual hard linkage going to the tranny...is that just the predecessor to the flexible style?

Has anyone done a write-up on tranny flush for the 722.12's?
