How to identify turbo brands on OM617

My nephew has a beautiful 84 300d with OM617.95X engine.

The turbo's wastegate actuator appears to have a hole in the diaphragm.

How do I tell which turbo it is? I know there are two brands.

The local dealer is clueless, but he "thinks" that the new wastegate actuator is about 700.00.

How about that! Doesn't know the brand but knows the price of the replacement part!

My issue is getting the replacement part for the right brand.

Thanks!

I've just heard people call that the KKK turbo. But just use the pelican parts catalogue type your car model in and it will tell u then part u need.

I also imagine you could post in the classified adds section on this for and get the part u need for about $100

This is a pic of the tage that is on the aluminum part of a KKK Turbo (notice the KKK on the Tag). The Garrett/Air Research Turbos have a similar tag.

Thanks for the two drawings! Any idea of model numbers? Can't read the words next to the turbo, can you tell me what they say?

For $700 a shop could swap in a used modern turbo. I wouldn't throw that kind of money at an old 80s lump

Sometimes you can get kissed too.

Not many have waste gate problems. A local yard sells turbos for $40 but you have to remove them. Lots of parts on fleabay. Some have swapped turbos and posted instructions on line.

If all this needs is the wastegate actuator, that's a much lower price for what appears to be a healthy turbo.

I have yet to find a wastegate actuator either for a Garrett T3 or for a KKK K26. When I next visit my nephew, we'll see which one he has.

I'd just like to find a source to call who might have both.
