Courtesy lights: thought it was a euro thing?
I was under the impression the two headlight switch positions to the left of center (the left and right independent marker light functions) were not functional on US models... but I just noticed the other night that on my 300CD (123.153 number 000001) they're functional. Am I wrong or is this an anomaly?

They work on my '86 SDL. The US models lack the "city" light in the headlight cluster. Not entirely sure what it's for, but the other functions should still work as intended.

Ah, I see. What, exactly, is the "city" light?

You're wrong.
The use of standing lamps is covered here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-DT5GmGTRMY City lights are low output lamps in the headlight unit used (in lieu of normal headlights) for driving in well-lit European cities. Example: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploads19/IMG01309+20111111+08031321002396.jpg

And they used those to fail my inspection once in Virginia.

Quote:
The OP's standing lamp functionality (two clicks left of center) is not differentiated between NAM cars and ROW (rest of world), except the US cars had a built-in redundancy in the form of lens reflectors required by DOT (which ROW market cars did not have).

IIRC city lights are to ROW what front corner lamps as park lights are to the US. ROW front corners are only turn signals to ROW.

Good to know. Informative video, too.
Interesting how ours brothers across the pond feel differently about vehicles and driving.
