It is on tight, my flare nut wrench wouldn't budge it. I just put some Kroil on it using a syringe with a needle. I'll let it set overnight and give it a pull in the morning.....

I think I messed up on my last post. There us usally a seperate dial for the Pilot Light it has a pilot and run position. When it is in the pilot position you can depress/push it down to send gas to the Pilot Light.
The heat setting dial is seperate.

There should be youtube vids and other articles on the thermocouple.

The dab of Kroil I put on last night didn't seem to work..
I placed the flare nut wrench on the supply line nut and tapped on the wrench with a hammer pretty hard. Not too hard because I didn't want to break the thermostat; the nut didn't budge!!
So, I used my needle/syringe to carefully place Kroil all around the diameter of the supply line nut. I'm going to wait awhile then try the flare nut wrench and hammer combo again. |

Are you sure that it is not a left hand thread?

Both the thermocouple and pilot light lines are right hand threads so I'm assuming the main supply line is right hand. That said, you could be correct. After it sits a bit, I'll try it both ways.....

Left hand threads are typically used only when component movement/rotation would cause a loss of torque.

Also in proprietary applications. I have seen some water heaters that have left hand threads on some fittings.

YES! it is right hand thread...
I was able to break it loose (right hand thread, same as the pilot light and thermocouple supply lines). However, when turning the wrench left, it would "catch".
I then turned the wrench slowly right and then back left and the nut would go ahead and turn. I'm thinking after I get it out I may need to use a thread chaser...... |

UPDATE
The line wrench was catching on the thermostat housing as I turned the wrench left. I merely turned the wrench upside down so it wouldn't catch on the housing and the nut turned smooth as silk. I sprayed green label brake fluid on the supply line nut and the threads in the thermostat, wiped them off/out with a clean cloth then let them sit for a few minutes.
I'm going to start it up in a few minutes and post back here with updates. |

The pilot light operates well; turned up the thermostat to "hot" and the burner fired right up. Turned on the hot water in the house, seems to be hot enough. All that said, I'm thinking I may need a new thermostat, this one has to be fairly old......

Let sleeping dogs lie. The thermostats rarely fail.

I'm inactive here for less than a year and now we are talking about water heaters in the Diesel Discussion forum? Unacceptable. Where are the moderators?

This forum is a family, and family can ask friendly questions. I watched over the thread, and made sure nobody made inappropriate suggestions, or out of bounds requests. The water heater pilot is a simple device, and he turned off the gas first. Moving to open discussion would be best now that the crisis is over.
